I realized I've never drawn Scout with a cold expression before, which is surprising, since those faces are always some of my favorites of his.

Scout is so fun and sweet and silly and such a bundle of joy, it's... striking. To see someone like that get so overtaken by sadness. To see xem break down from guilt and exhaustion. To see xem look like they're too tired to feel anything anymore.

I guess their highs are so high, it's easy to overlook how low their lows can be. In a fairer world, you might have never known there was another side to them at all.

They make you laugh, they let you feel loved, they step up at any chance they get to help you or brighten your day. But they're not immune. They feel sorrow as heavily as anyone else's, and they aren't good at dealing with it either. They fall for their own cruel lies and hide their every struggle, just as you might. It's... very real.

And she thinks she should be immune. She thinks there's some way it must be possible. She thinks she has to be. But that could never be true. Heroes aren't perfect or special; they're just the ones that keep trying.

You can be so silly and so sad, and it means so much to me that Home's Gift shows this so unabashedly. Scout's wide range of expression and extreme states of being are one of the biggest reasons why I love star so much.
