Jack Grapes, Artist, Writer, Author, Instructor: Oh, you’re starting off with a hard question. Well, I’m an actor. Method acting is a big school of acting that Marlon Brando and people like that studied under (Marlyn Monroe) and so forth. I studied method acting and it stresses an authentic response to what your work is. You’re not acting with gestures, you’re being true, you’re being natural. No BS Advice To Anyone Who Wants To Be A Screenwriter - Jim Agnew

Film Courage: What no BS screenwriting advice can you give to young screenwriters or even older who’ve never sold something and think that they can make a living at this?

Jim Agnew, Screenwriter/Producer:  Well, you’ve got to be realistic. You have to look at the steps involved and what is your endgame? Do you want to get a movie made? Is it a small movie? What kind of movie are you writing? A kind of studio-type script? Are you writing a small intimate thing that can be made for half a million dollars? So you have to kind of set the parameters of what you want to do and kind of take it from there because if you’re a young screenwriter and you want to do this for a living, you need to write a couple samples and write some scripts. You need to be around the film business. TV has given a lot of opportunities to being on a writing staff. There’s so many TV shows now too. That’s a great way to becoming writers. You can become a writer’s assistant get to know the working writers and you’ll actually get paid taking notes…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).

How To Know If You Have A Great Movie Idea - Jim Agnew

Film Courage: What do you say to the screenwriter who says it’s not their job to get the movie made. It’s just their job to have ideas and come up with a story?

Jim Agnew, Screenwriter/Producer:  They probably won’t get a movie made. I mean it’s just a team process. It’s like if you get to a certain level where you can get paid very well off of screenplays, you can have that mindset. But those are high level professionals. What I Wish I Knew About Screenwriting When I Started - Joe Wilson

Film Courage: What is something about storytelling you wish you had learned earlier in your career or you wish you had stuck to your guns on something? Maybe people tried to talk you out of it?

Joe Wilson, Writer/Director/Comedian/Photographer:  I guess I wished I’d knew how much more character development was to writing. I don’t think I developed the characters enough when I started writing and I think that’s where if I had known to take more time to develop the characters I think I would have had less of a challenge in either the writing or the rewriting (especially the rewriting) because I think when you’ve got a draft you are going through it…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
