As a certified sonamy hater (in most cases) sonic 4 is going to be hhhhh. If the first female mobian's plot revolves around a love interest I'm going to jail
Lot of thoughts on Sonic 3
Genuinely hated most of the Eggman and Gerald stuff. Undercut a lot of moments that could have been good and felt like they were onscreen more than Shadow. Kind of just feels like they were happy to have Jim Carrey again and upped his screentime and gave him a character he shouldn't have been playing outside of flashbacks.
Didn't enjoy Gerald as a character. He's more complex in his few scenes in the games than he was in the full movie. Wasn't much of a relationship with Shadow or Maria and no representation of his downward spiral and grief leading to his batshit revenge plot. And yeah the slapstick angle absolutely assassinated his character.
Sonic's arc was over set up but also fell flat. Tom got thrown back and all of a sudden Sonic is out for blood and going against Tails and Knuckles after cracking unfunny jokes the whole movie?? Hello???
Just found Sonic more annoying than charming in this one. It's not as bad in the first two but it rlly messes with the tone and his arc here.
Human side characters are fine. But the olive garden commanders death and Tom's minor hospitalisation injury made me laugh.
No Rouge or Amy in an sa2 adaptation.
No Maria's wish or any of the interesting stuff with Gerald manipulating him.
The women in the military joke. WHAT. Fucking bad in general but then with the lack of Amy and Rouge. Fucking yikes.
Missed a lot of stuff from the game generally. No ARK, no Maria being sick, no biolizard.
The moon being destroyed as a display of power in the games is really good, hate that it's an accident here and a throwaway joke.
Shadow's death was rlly underbaked. Sonic nearly falls instead and Shadow just suddenly dies in the explosion. What. Also nobody seems to care that much that he died.
Ending felt anticlimactic compared to the game.
Should of seen WAY more of the "Ark" raid. Not sure how I feel about Maria dying in an explosion. Definitely didn't like the lack of wish, sayonara or her saving him. Also how did Gerald survive then live into his hundreds.
Felt like so much happened but very little of substance.
Weird tone
Liked the Guardian Knuckles moment until it later cuts to Wade.
Genuinely don't know how a wonky early 2000s game made me more emotional than a full movie.
The Maria scenes were nice and I like her characterisation here. Live and Learn motif throughout was rlly cool and reminded me of how they used it in sa2 (even if the proper song doesn't deliver from being cut off before it really starts by uncomfortable Robotnik slapstick.) Super form fight slapped and their conversation after was good. Characterisation and design for Shadow was solid. Performances were solid. Liked Knuckles little moment of backing down from a fight. Agent Stone is great as always. Post credit scene was great. Some parts wre pretty funny. Wade Whipple is on screen less than a minute.
Genuinely think theres a good movie in here somewhere if they cut a lot of the tonal bullshit and didn't make changes that don't contribute to a scu or general movie adaptation.

Felt like some of the emotional moments in that would have hit better if the movie wasn't circlejerking Jim Carrey. Could have spent more time with Shadow either in the present or through flashbacks with Maria (show her illness???) or setting up Sonic's under baked arc. Why did we have all those weird slapstick gags. And why did they undercut the Super Shadow and Super Sonic scene.

im just saying, an scu where the plot of the movies are sonic living in san francisco w rachel, maddie, and jojo and they teach him like. idk. lessons abt community or solidarity or something. becuz his entire lore in the movies is that hes been alone for so long and just wants to have a place to belong. that wouldve been Nice. eggman would still be there too tho in my beautiful visions he is a played by a PROPER bear of a man, instead of. [gags] Jim Carrey [turns green w nausea]. maybe the plot is like. uh. idk. smth like sonic x where sonic goes to earth and hes all alone and he meets jojo and SHE feels all alone too and rlly awkward and self-conscious and they go on some wacky adventure becuz sonic is being targeted by GUN and jojo doesnt want to lose her first and only best friend, and they drag maddie and rachel into it somehow and they have to defeat the military and eggman together so they wont dissect sonic or whatever. and then afterwards sonic just lives in their apartment now.

Saw a post abt the Sonic movies that was like "plz filter negativity posts better" which is GOOD AND TRUE you should be doing that. Ok. But then they kept going to imply that the criticisms of the Sonic movies are all entirely Personal and Ignorable and not like. Usually abt the horrific copaganda, misogynistic writing, and Paramount's disgusting zionism.... Guys a lot of ppls problem w the Knuckles show wasn't JUST a bastardization of Knuckles' character or thinking Wade was annoying or whatever, but like was focused on the grotesque Zionist message from that one episode 😭😭😭 you can enjoy something and still recognize that it has intrinsic and huge glaring flaws and talk abt them. I think actually you Should be speaking up abt the misogyny, zionism and propaganda the SCU supports and discusses, ESPECIALLY if you like the movies! Its important to be able to recognize these things in media and admit that even media you personally enjoy can be deeply problematic, instead of hiding it away and pretending those HUGE FLAWS aren't issues actually....
