Later on, I came back to sculpture in my free time was able to then finish the latex. I then had to cover the head with mod rock to create the mould shape. To make sure I would be able to take the mould off, I had to create it in a different section. Which I drew out in a pen. So I then layered the mod rock, using water to make it usable and placing it over the specific section. I had to make sure the sections pushed up against each other so the pieces would remain separate. Once this why dry I was then able to take off the cast and then take off the latex cover. Once I took it off I was able to clean it. I then put that back in the mould I had made and then I was able to then put that in a base, so I would be able to pour the concrete. Martin then filled concrete in the mould which I then left to set.

Sculpture workshop 2

In the second workshop I was somewhat able to help and improve the head. I was able to rotate the head more and not make it stick out as much. I was then able to add the hair, which I have changed from Lord Farquad original bowl cut to a modern style, to represent the everyday man by giving him a quiff.

I completed this by breaking up the clay into small long sections using utensils and began to add them to the head to act as different strands. I did the strands in different sizes and shape and when I could try to cut them to a sort of point shape to make it look more like a hair follicle. I kept building the hair up all the way to the neck after this was done I added done final layer to the front hairline making it more predominant and quiff like by adding a bend to the hair from the front making it go back. This greatly helped the make the quiff more high and realistic. I then went in with a small utensil and drew through each piece, trying to give the design a sort of hair texture. I did this throughout the whole head.

Then I was able to add the ears, this was done by creating a ball and pressing them flat. And then simply applying to the head. Which I then added details to make them look more like ears. After this is was happy with the head design and could proceed onto making the latex layer. Which you do by covering the head with latex solution with a brush and then drying it with a hairdryer. You repeat this process until you have done it around 5-7 times.

Sculpture workshop 1

We were told we were going to create the head of theatrical/ mythical character but ‘reimagined’. So for my idea, I hoped to create Lord Farquad, which I thought would be good to do as he has quite distinguished features which I thought would be easy to make. But I hope to make him look more modern such as giving him a more modern hairstyle rather than the helmet of hair he has.

The first lesson was spent creating a head which started with a blob of clay, which was kept up on two nails I had hammered  into the piece of wood. Them I slowly began to mould the head into the shape of a head using my fingers to bring in the neck. I then had to bring the head up at the back to give it a more realistic head shape.  I then started to add the details to try and make the head look like Lord Farquad. Such as the eyes which I did by first using my fingers to create eye sockets. I then pushed the eyeballs in and covered the eye with clay. Which I then cut out the eye shape using a small utensil.

I continued to use small utensils to help calve and shape my design. I created a triangle for the nose and then added extra bits for nostril as Farquad are quite big. I then went on to build up the chin to make it more like his, being quite big. I then with a utensil went in and began to add some details to the design such a wrinkles to make it look more realistic and more like him.
