Mamuk
Mamuk was one of the unlucky whales of the 1968 October captures. Over 20 of the now endangered Southern Resident orcas were captured, including the infamous J1, Ruffles, and all were released but 5. 2 of these 5 were obtained by the U.S. Navy, and the other 3 were shipped off to parks. 4 year old Mamuk ended up at Sea-Arama in Texas. His tank was very tiny, and the water temperature was reportedly low, but he seemed to adjust well and appeared to thrive in his new home. He was quickly trained for shows, and became the parks star attraction! In 1970, Sea-Arama bought Lil Nooka, a fellow Southern Resident who was captured during the infamous Penn Cove capture [Lolita was captured during this roundup]. Lil Nooka, unlike Mamuk did not adjust to his new environment and drowned after 7 months. Mamuk was once again alone, but didn't appear to be too affected by his companions death. Mamuk was a very reliable performer, and was even trained for waterworks!
Mamuk sadly died 3 years after Lil Nooka, in 1974. He was about 10 years old, which was actually quite impressive at the time of his death. Mamuk's cause of death was acute streptococcal septicemia, a common killer among captives. Mamuk spent 5 and a half years at Sea-Arama and was without a companion besides the 7 months he had Lil' Nooka. After Mamuk died, Sea-Arama never obtained another orca, and 16 years later, in 1990, the park closed down.
Mamuk was just starting to sprout at the time of his death. Captivity kills.
