After seeing this small but significant breakthrough in equality between women and men, I feel that the complex situation regarding this is much more complex than it initially suggests. And I have always believed that women are women's worst enemy; however, the attached article, as well as what happened at the plenary, shows that women can also be women's greatest support. Because only women can truly understand what women have to go through, whether it's sexual assault, appearance, or any other barrier we must face.
A video from a year ago, how can these reporters not hear what they’re saying? He continuously attempts to explain to them their ignorant ideology but they aren’t trying to comprehend what he’s saying. Why is it that society associates terrorism or suppressing violence with the image of middle-eastern’s or those of Islamic beliefs? The definition of terrorists is a person who uses terrorism in the pursuit of political aims. A person. A person of any race, beliefs, or religion. It seems that even now, reporters, candidates, or influential figures ignore this and with their biased beliefs turn to reject Syrian refugees with this ill-minded ideology.
Our Last Plenary
Totally different from all the other plenaries which would require us to basically sit through an individual speaker talking. This plenary was interactive and heart touching. Seeing everyone giving respect, attention, love was special. Everyone could connect with the topics being discussed and open up to the comfortable surrounding that the plenary gave. Its rare to be in an environment where you are appreciated for being who you are and to be open without fear of being judged or dismissed. I respect all those who spoke and the mentors who took their time to set up the event and also discussed their own personal experiences. Thank you.
Douglass Career Conference
The Career Conference helped me with my interview skills, dining etiquette, and resume building. I am glad I joined DRC which has so many helpful programs like this one for women. Events like these help encourage and empower us to go into more male-dominated fields such as STEM and business. I think DRC should have more events that will help us to succeed in the future. Events which empower us can increase the number of women in “female-minority” based fields, such as the ones stated above.
Plenary 1
The plenary featuring, Lauren Rankin, a social media’s activist and an expert in reproductive rights, introduced a new perspective of violence that surrounds the sensitive matter of abortions. Her accounts of being physically attacked, yelled at, threatened, and stalked seem to be disregarded and ignored as it seemed inconvenient to the public due to her role in protecting women who made a decision. Decisions that deeply affect their mentality. In hearing of all the aggressive actions involved in socially deemed sensitive matters was like a slap to reality. There exists people, who abuse their beliefs and try to force them onto others taking to extreme methods and inconsideration. When we look to media, media's perception of aggressive protesters does not do any justice to Lauren Rankin’s perspective. We do not see the tears from women who are being harassed by self dictated evangelists. We don’t see the violent depictions that society placed on these women, the women who made these difficult decisions based off their beliefs or situations. All we see is what media or society dictates.
