42. Delta Sleep with support from Seims, Yomi Ship, and Bear The Mammoth, Howler 13/10
This was an interesting one for me because I was completely hyped beyond belief for the three supports, and Delta Sleep were simply an added bonus. Mike from Birds Robe knows how to curate a lineup like no other, and this was a perfect progression from post-rock to math-rock with a touch of the progressive in between.
Our beloved Bear The Mammoth were up first, showcasing mostly songs from their new album Purple Haus. These are some of the nicest guys in post-rock and it shines through in how they play - this set was a joy to watch and a great way to round out what has been a HUGE year for them! Rubon Cube is such a great song live and an incredible set closer.
Next we had Yomi Ship from WA. They were stunning, falling somewhere just between post- and math-rock, with some super intricate basslines that were mesmerising to watch. Especially loved hearing their latest single, The Izoku, and I'm really looking forward to hearing more from them.
Then it was time for Seims, the band we were mostly there to see! Sim, Sam, and Chris are a force to be fucking reckoned with. The energy the three of them bring is enough to convert anyone in the room, and by the end of their set I think everyone was on board! Every member is so dynamic and fun to watch. Sim loves to give his guitar to an unsuspecting audience member during Cavalcade, and the dude he chose tonight actually did a killer job! Finishing with The Mountain's Scream was so fucking intense - intense enough for me to bash my head really hard on the foldback amp by accident, and as I type this one week on it still fucking hurts. The ONLY problem with Seims is that they're from fkn Sydney and so I don't get to see them half as often as I'd like, but twice in one year is a treat!
I gotta admit Delta Sleep's set kind of passed in a haze for me - it was wonderful, and their bassist in particular was a joy to watch! I stood back a bit to let the bigger fans forward and it was a very loving, enthusiastic crowd which was lovely to see. The band seemed thrilled that so many people were there for them! Joyful vibes all around.
