When I was at Harvard in the late 1940s, E. M. Forster delivered a lecture. I dutifully brought up one of my E. M. Forster volumes to be signed. He crossed out his name on the title page and wrote “E. M. Forster.” I thought, “This is the way all authors do this.” As far as I know, E. M. Forster and myself are the only ones that do.
