👁 #SengaNengudi “African American artist Senga Nengudi expresses her ideas about the human body through performance-based sculptures and installations. Her best-known work R.S.V.P. (1975)—so called because the artist really wanted people to respond—was an installation of sand-filled, dark-hued pantyhose knotted and stretched into all directions. “It relates to the elasticity of the human body," Nengudi said. "From tender, tight beginnings to sagging… The body can only stand so much push and pull until it gives way." Performance art by Enam Gbewonyo @enamgd 👏🏾 Still from my performance ‘Nude Me/Under the Skin: The Awakening of Black Women’s Visibility one Pantyhose at a time’ It was an honour to deliver the closing performance at @artsterritory’s #ThePalaceofRitual for the opening week of Venice Biennale. Tied to my current body of work ‘Nude Me/ Under the Skin’ and a follow up to my first performance ‘Nude Me/ Under the Skin: Reclaiming Black Women’s Visibility one Pantyhose at a time’ this performance of healing speaks to the sensuality of the female form, and the elasticity and malleability of the human body. In this way it is very much a homage to the amazing #SengaNengudi. ‘Nude Me/ Under the Skin: The Awakening of Black Women’s Visibility one Pantyhose at a time’ represents the many forms of bondage that constrict the black woman to fit a mould not intended for her. To arrive at the point of reclamation and awakening, black women must face the pain of their ancestor’s past, before releasing it, and opening up space to receive their love and heal. With this performance I created a live vessel for this process of healing.
