From across the garden, he studied her critically. He could smell the electricity in the air, impossible in its dormant state to pick up by feel, but always following her from the core of her X-gene. This was Storm, and from the murmurs he heard, she had real pull in this place; the leader, in this time.
He still hadn’t arrived upon a solid critique of Haven; nor honestly, a clear foresight into how he felt about it as a permanent residence. Group living, in general, wasn’t really his thing. It may be plush with opportunity in the short term — his time with Osborn’s Avengers was the perfect example of that — but there was nothing worse than when an organized society of people got to know each other too well. God only knew what might… come out. Daken was careful, but not careful enough to play by the rules. He knew he couldn’t continue to toy with people simply the way he was. As dangerous as the world outside was, he was only here for his sister. His dilemma wasn’t something he would ever trouble her with, but it weighed on his mind. He didn’t want to leave her, not after all that time feeling so lost; but Haven was too large to be forgiving, too small to leave no trail. Daken had many talents, but being stifled was one situation he could not deal with.
If he was going be here in the long term, he knew his situation couldn’t remain as it was. He wanted power. He couldn’t remember a time he’d ever been satisfied with his accomplishments. The state that he approached upon spending too long in the wild was one of many inheritances he hated his father for. The only way to keep himself together — to return to his height of glory — was to work his way up the ladder of command. Whether by manipulation, blackmail, bribery, seduction, or inconspicuous murder; he was going to achieve power. He could be very patient, but he needed to at least have a plan. He needed this goal, more than anything. Warming up to Storm was a good way to begin.
He shouted a greeting, jogging in her direction as she admired the plants and greenery of the town square. He smiled sunnily, his sea-blue eyes alight; delightfully belying his true intentions. “This is such a beautiful town here — Miss Munroe, right? I just thought I’d introduce myself, if you have a moment.” Maybe she would remember him beating the X-Men’s collective asses; or maybe for them it all just blurred in with all the rest of their school attacks. He could swing this regardless, he felt sure; with the rate at which heroes fought one another; this could go smoothly yet, provided he played all his pieces just right.
She recognised the man, not just from past fights, but from the features of his face. Of course his skin was darker, and some of the angles of his face were sharpened or softened by the influence of his mother’s genetics; but Logan’s eyes, blue as deep water, met hers when she faced him. This could be catastrophic, or maybe, just maybe, some good could come from a family reunion.
“I do have a moment, Daken. Please, call me Ororo.” The fact was, there were enemies of the X-Men here already. Most people could be afforded the benefit of the doubt.
