You tried as hard as you could to break free from the snake monster's coil around your body. But it all felt useless. You were forced to hold your breath as the coil got tighter, until slowly, your consciousness began to fade.
"(Name)! Hang in there!" Seojin shouted.
Bang! Bang!! Bang!!
"Wait! Stop shooting!"
Sergeant Kim's command made Seokchan, who had been trying to weaken the monster with his shots, stop immediately. But not Seojin.
He kept shooting at the creature, even though not a single bullet hit the monster's body.
"Sergeant Min! (Name) will get hurt if you keep shooting!"
This time, Sergeant Kim's words finally woke Seojin up. The man glared angrily at the monster, which was using your body as a shield from their bullets.
"Damn monster!" Seojin growled.
The monster stared sharply at the three soldiers with its black eyes. Every now and then, its tongue, which looked like a snake's tongue, stuck out of its mouth.
Even though its upper body still looked like a human body, its two arms were fused to the sides of its body, so the creature relied more on its long tail to keep you wrapped up.
As if taking advantage of the shooting stopping, the creature quickly slithered away from the mini-market area and headed into the forest behind the building.
Seeing that, Seojin immediately ran after it while shooting at the monster angrily.
But before he could get past the bushes toward the forest, Sergeant Kim grabbed him first.
"Shit! What are you doing?!" Seojin yelled.
"Calm down! We need to make a plan before going into that monster's territory," Sergeant Kim replied.
"What plan?! That creature took (Name) there! If we don't chase it now, she'll be in danger!" Seojin said.
"Sergeant Kim is right, we can't just go there. We need backup to save (Name)," Seokchan tried to convince him.
"Dammit!" Seojin messed up his hair in frustration.
"Sergeant, what's with the shooting?" Bang Jinho and a few other platoon members from another team came over.
Sergeant Kim turned, "A monster took (Name) into the forest. We need to gather all our ammunition to save her."
"All of it, Sergeant? Isn't that too much?" one soldier said.
That made Seojin step forward, staring right at the soldier. "What do you mean too much?! That monster could hurt (Name) anytime, and you call that too much?!"
The soldier cleared his throat, a bit scared. "N-not like that, sir. It's just that she's just a regular survivor from the stadium, plus she's close friends with that killer girl. We don't need to risk all our ammunition. We don't knoㅡ"
Bughh!!
"Sergeant Min Seojin!" Sergeant Kim warned.
Jinho and Seokchan quickly tried to pull Seojin away from that soldier.
"Shut your mouth if you want to stay alive!" Seojin stared indignantly at the soldier.
"Calm down, sir. Right now we need to focus on finding a way to save (Name)," Seokchan said.
Seojin let out an annoyed huff. He still glared at the soldier. But Seokchan was right. Right now, saving you was the priority, not arguing with what others said.
-----
Moving quietly and carefully, half of the soldiers on the expedition watched the monster from behind the bushes.
Seojin saw you lying unconscious on top of the snake monster's nest, and the creature had been circling around you as if it didn't want to give any opening for the soldiers trying to save you.
"What did that monster actually want with her? It didn't look like it wanted to hurt (Name)," Seokchan said softly.
"That monster looked like it was protecting its child from danger," replied one soldier.
"Could it be that monster used to be that girl's relative?" Seokchan muttered to himself.
But the man next to him heard it.
"No. That girl has no one," Seojin said, not without reason.
He had once caught you crying in the stadium because you missed your family. And maybe because of the mood that night, you told him about how you were all alone now because your family died in an accident. You poured out your sadness to the man who often annoyed you with his attitude.
And that night, the man who often annoyed you was worried sick about you being held captive by a monster.
Seojin wanted nothing more than to run to you and take you away right then. But his logical side agreed more with Sergeant Kim's plan, so he could only watch from a few meters away, waiting for the right moment to attack the monster.
Until he saw you slowly regaining consciousness. His body tensed up without him realizing it. Worry filled Seojin, especially when the monster came closer to you because it knew you were awake.
"Damn! I can't wait any longer!"
After saying that, Seojin immediately got up from his spot and ran toward you. He shot at the monster from behind, but the monster noticed Seojin's arrival first and dodged.
Seojin hissed in frustration and kept shooting at the monster brutally.
"Arghh!!"
Too focused on the target in front of him, Seojin didn't realize there was danger lurking from another direction. Turns out there were two snake monsters there. And the newly revealed monster immediately grabbed Seojin's body with its tail coil.
Seojin tried to break free. He kept growling angrily, especially since both his arms were also trapped, so he couldn't reach his weapon lying on the ground.
Meanwhile, you, now fully aware of what was happening around you, immediately tried to stand up and help Seojin. But someone else pulled you away behind the bushes first, then ducked down and hid.
"Sergeant Kim!" you said, relieved to see him.
Sergeant Kim and some soldiers had spread out. He had been watching near the nest where you were.
You turned your head back toward Seojin, still trapped by the monster. Anxiety immediately rose in you.
"What about Seojin?! We have to save him!" you said in a panic.
Instead of answering you, Sergeant Kim turned on his radio. "Team 1, ready to attack, now!" he said.
After that, Seokchan and the other soldiers started emerging from behind the bushes and shooting at the monsters.
But both monsters seemed agile, dodging the soldiers' attacks.
Then one of the monsters stepped forward and slammed the soldiers with its big tail, sending them flying a short distance away.
"Team 2, move!"
You turned when you heard Sergeant Kim giving orders to his men through the radio. Soon after, several other soldiers appeared with flamethrowers aimed at the monster. They tried to shoot and burn the monster from close range. But again, the soldiers were thrown back by the monster's tail swipes before they could get close.
On the other side, you watched Seojin worriedly, still gripped by the other monster. The man was still trying to break free, even biting the monster's skin.
"Seojin!!"
You screamed when you saw the monster smile horribly and show its two sharp fangs. The monster looked angry and wanted to bite Seojin with its fangs.
Without hesitation, you ran toward Seojin. The man was completely surprised to see you suddenly jump onto the back of the monster's body, then choke its neck with both your hands.
Shocked by the sudden attack, the monster immediately released its coil from Seojin's body. The creature violently writhed its body in all directions, swinging its tail toward you to shake you off.
But you didn't give up. With all your strength, you kept choking it and hung on completely to the monster's body.
Seeing its friend in danger, the other monster hissed in fury. The creature quickly moved toward you, but shots from the side managed to stop it. Caught off guard, the soldiers' attacks hit its body. That made the creature fall down helpless with gunshot wounds on its body.
Then Seokchan and several soldiers with flamethrowers quickly burned the monster.
Seeing that, you shouted at Seokchan. "Seokchan, hurry with this one! I-I can't hold it any longer!" you screamed, struggling.
The soldiers didn't just stand around watching you. They had been trying to shoot the monster you were riding, and several shots hit the monster's body.
But that only made the monster angrier and move more violently, almost making you fall if you hadn't tightened your grip.
"Seokchan, hurry!!"
"No, that could hurt (Name)!" Seojin protested.
Actually, even without the protest, Seokchan had been hesitating because he wasn't sure. The problem was, if he burned the monster, you would get burned too.
"Kim, do something!" Seojin shouted at Sergeant Kim behind him.
Sergeant Kim stayed quiet. He tried to think of another way to save you. But no idea came.
Seeing you struggle more and more to hold the monster, Seokchan looked at Sergeant Kim for approval.
"Hey! Are you crazy?!"
Seojin of course yelled angrily when he saw Sergeant Kim nod slightly at Seokchan. That meant he agreed to let Seokchan burn the monster—and you along with it.
"(Name)! After Seokchan starts burning it, you have to jump immediately!" Sergeant Kim shouted at you.
You heard him, and even though it was hard, you nodded quickly.
Without waiting any longer, Seokchan and one soldier with a flamethrower started approaching the monster, backed up by other soldiers shooting at it from behind.
"(Name), jump!"
Thud!!
You fell hard when you jumped off the monster's body as it started to burn.
Seojin quickly came to you. He lifted your head and put it on his lap. Panicking, he gently patted your cheeks.
"Hey, (Name), can you hear me?" he said.
But there was no sign that you were waking up. That made him even more anxious. He was afraid something bad had happened to you.
"(Name), wake up," Seojin still tried to wake you.
Seojin had never felt that scared in his life. Especially when he couldn't feel a pulse on your wrist.
"(Name), wake up! You can't do this to me! Hey, wake up!"
"Seojin," Sergeant Kim approached Seojin and put a hand on his trembling shoulder.
"(Name)... she won't wake up. Quick, do something Kim!" Seojin who had been looking down, now looked at his comrade with blurry eyes.
Meanwhile, his men who had defeated the monster now looked at Seojin with pity. Some also looked at him in disbelief—they never expected that the arrogant Seojin would show his weak side when you got hurt.
You, who often argued with him, you who often showed your dislike for him, and you who remained indifferent to his sarcastic remarks.
But not many knew that the annoyance had long turned into care. The harsh words between you two were just a way to hide your desire to talk to each other—to know how each other was doing.
Only someone who was perceptive would realize that the hatred between you two had melted into a feeling neither of you ever expected.
At least, that was how Seojin felt. That man realized that he had fallen for you.
He couldn't stop being harsh to you, because that would feel very strange. It wouldn't fit the image others saw of him.
He also couldn't confess his feelings to you, because from the start, he always denied that feeling in his heart. Besides, you were someone who often disagreed with him. Of course, it would hurt his ego.
But seeing you so helpless like that, Seojin couldn't lie to himself anymore. He was afraid of losing you.
"Ughh... S-seojin?"
Happiness filled the man when he saw you slowly waking up. Seojin immediately pulled you into a hug, crying tears of relief and gratitude.
"Akhh! S-seojin, I can't breathe, your hug is tooㅡ"
"Sorry. Are you okay?" Seojin said as he pulled away from you.
You blinked slowly before finally giving a small smile. "I didn't expect you to be so worried about me," you said.
"Of course I am, you idiot! Don't ever do something dangerous like that again!" Seojin said angrily, though really it was to cover up his embarrassment.
You noticed that, and let out a small laugh before wincing when you felt pain in your stomach.
"Hey, what's wrong? Are you hurt?" Seojin asked in a panic.
"No, it's nothing."
Seojin clicked his tongue softly, then without a word, he lifted you up with both arms.
"H-hey!? Why are you carrying me?!" Now it was your turn to panic.
"I'm taking her to the car." Instead of answering you, he said that to Sergeant Kim.
"Okay. You two can rest while the other team finishes their mission," Sergeant Kim replied.
"Put me down!" you ordered, as the man walked past Sergeant Kim and the other platoon members.
The man ignored you.
"Hey, put me down!" you protested, trying to hit the man carrying you.
Seojin who had been looking forward, now stopped walking and looked at you fully. You blinked, suddenly feeling nervous being stared at from such close distance.
"Be quiet, or I'll throw you."
You immediately shut your mouth, partly because you knew he was not completely joking, but mostly because you noticed how tightly he was holding you. His arms felt secure, almost protective, even though his words said otherwise.
Seojin continued walking toward the military vehicle in silence. His jaw was clenched, and he refused to look down at you. But you could feel his heartbeat. It was fast and panicked, still not fully calm after everything that had happened.
When you finally reached the truck, he did not put you down right away. Instead, he just stood there holding you, staring at nothing.
"Seojin?" you called out softly. "You can put me down now."
No answer.
"Seojin…"
"I said shut up."
But his voice cracked this time. You saw it. His eyes were red, still wet from earlier. That tough guy act was falling apart, just a little.
Without warning, he climbed into the back of the truck with you still in his arms. He sat down on the metal bench and pulled you onto his lap, not letting go. He buried his face into the crook of your neck. His breath was warm against your skin, and you felt his arms tighten around you as if he was afraid you would disappear.
"Don't ever," he whispered, his voice low and rough. "Ever do something that stupid again. You hear me?"
You blinked, your heart suddenly beating faster for a completely different reason. "Seojin—"
"I am serious, (Name)." He pulled back just enough to look at you. His expression was fierce, but his eyes were soft, softer than you had ever seen. "I thought you were dead. I thought..." He stopped himself and bit his lip.
Then, before you could respond, he leaned in and pressed a quick, rough kiss to your forehead. It was not gentle or romantic like in the movies. It was desperate and almost clumsy, like he did not know how else to show you what he felt.
He pulled away just as fast, his ears turning red. "That was nothing," he mumbled, already avoiding your eyes. "Do not get the wrong idea."
You touched your forehead, stunned. A small smile crept onto your face. "You kissed me."
"I did not."
"You definitely did."
"It was an accident."
"An accident?"
"Yes. My face slipped."
You laughed. You actually laughed, even though your whole body still ached. And for the first time since you woke up, Seojin's lips twitched into a small, almost shy smile.
"Idiot," he muttered, but this time it sounded almost like an endearment.
He took off his jacket and draped it over your shoulders without saying a word. The night air was cold, and you were still shaking.
"You are shaking," he said simply, as if that explained everything.
You pulled the jacket tighter. It smelled like him, gunpowder and sweat and something warm underneath.
"Seojin," you called softly.
He looked at you. "What?"
"Thank you… for not giving up on me."
He did not answer right away. Instead, he looked out toward the forest where the rest of the team was still finishing their mission. The sounds of distant gunfire and shouting had begun to fade.
"Someone has to keep you alive," he finally said, his voice quieter than usual. "Since you clearly cannot do it yourself."
You smiled and rested your head against his shoulder. He did not push you away. In fact, you felt him lean his head against yours.
His hand found yours in the darkness of the truck. His fingers interlocked with yours, rough and warm, and he did not let go.
The two of you sat there in silence, waiting for the others to return. And even though he would never say it out loud, you finally understood. Seojin cared. He always had.
