As part of my Franklin Expedition careers project, I transcribed several entries from ADM 196. I am in the process of cleaning up the transcriptions, and the first of them, Stephen Samuel Stanley’s service record, is up! He was the surgeon on Erebus.

I’ve included a visual timeline of his service record using RAWGraph, which I first used when building the poster. I am enamored with it now. It is so much easier to digest data at a glance this way. It’s interesting that his pattern of service on Navy ships was so consistent: two-year stints separated by a few months on a different ship.

Like the other members of the Franklin Expedition, his final discharge date of 31 March 1854 is the date the Admiralty officially declared him deceased. It is unlikely he survived past 1848, so I graphed his time on Erebus accordingly.
