Old Dice Staging Methods: Batch #7
Drabble #364
X: that’s not what you’ve said.
“Why did you tell Douglas you hated the opera? That’s not what you said when you got home.”
“What are you talking about? I did hate it.”
“No! When you got back you were smiling. And you said it was ‘almost tolerable’.”
“…I said no such thing.”
“Well, not to me. But I heard you saying it to Herc when you got out of the car.”
“Did you, indeed.”
“Yeah. Just before you kissed him.”
“Arthur!”
“It’s all right, Mum! I don’t mind you kissing Herc!”
“It’s not about whether or not you mind, it’s about you spying on us!”

IV: you’ll be alright.
“Oh, I know, GERTI,” said Douglas, sympathetically, over the sound of a wailing alarm. “But you’ll be alright. We’ve turned both of them off before, and you still landed, didn’t you? There, now.”
Herc stared at him. “D’you not think there might be a more practical way of dealing with this, Captain? Rather than talking to her like she’s a cow in labour, I mean.”
The alarm ceased its beeping suddenly. Douglas turned to his co-pilot, triumphant. “Sorry, Herc, what were you were saying? I couldn’t hear you over the din, but it’s stopped now. As you might have noticed.”
Drabble #277
III: who's watching them?
Arthur's laptop was open in the middle of the table, and Herc slid it over to allow room for Carolyn's tray, catching a glance at the display as he did so.
"Ah, he's uploading another video. 'The Travelling Lemon Goes to Europe.' That explains all those photos he was taking."
Carolyn frowned. "What d'you mean, 'another video'?"
"Oh, didn't you know?" Herc tilted the screen to show her. "He's made quite a few now."
"What? But who's watching them?"
He pointed at a view counter. "Nearly ninety-two thousand people, apparently. And that's just the 'Yellow Car' one."
"Well I never."

VI: you’re so pretty.
“You’re so pretty,” said Verity, perched on the edge of Theodora’s bed and gazing at her adoringly. “Am I really going to match with you at the wedding?”
Theo turned aside from the mirror, smiling. “Of course. We’ll be just as pretty as each other.” She bent down a little. “Would you mind undoing the top hook? I should probably take it off now. Theresa won’t be happy if I get a mark on it.”
Verity unhooked it. “Would she take you off being a bridesmaid, if you did?”
“Oh, no, she wouldn’t dare,” said Theo. “Don’t worry, we’re safe.”
Drabble #323
V: if you want to make this a regular thing...
“If you wanted to, you know,” Herc began, somewhat hesitantly, “make this a regular thing…”
Carolyn didn’t look very impressed with his choice of words, but miraculously, she didn’t dismiss him outright, either.
“I don’t know about regular, exactly,” she said, “But it might perhaps be tolerated a few more times. Not that,” she punctuated the word with a swipe at the opera programme that lay discarded on the dashboard. “But this.” Her hand waved vaguely in the air between the two of them.
Herc smiled.
“Especially since it’s my turn to choose the activity again,” she added. “Lucky you.”
Drabble #363
VIII: i failed you.
“I failed you, Arthur,” says Gordon, standing before him at the entrance of the barn. “I should never have left you here, on this little nothing of a farm.”
Arthur folds his arms in front of him, suddenly brave. “No,” he says. “That’s not how you failed me, Dad. I’m fine here. I’ve never wanted to be anywhere else.”
“You don’t know any better,” Gordon says. “Why’s your mother holding onto this land, eh? Only because no-one’ll buy it. Talk to her, would you. Remind her my offer’s still open.”
“No,” says Arthur again, but his father’s already walking away.
