I looked at his face to find him shocked, the type of shock that people would draw as cartoons; the wide eyes without blinking, the jaw drop that closed and opened again to ask something, but no words made out.

He stared at me for a moment, and I noticed that the sickly pale complexion he had on his face was disappearing and returning to normal color. A startled and disbelieving laugh came out of his mouth as his posture relaxed, and he slumped to his seat in relief.

“I guess we both were losing our minds for no reason…” I teased him, which made him smile widely.

I hummed in response, and I tugged my hand from his grip to arrange the papers correctly and keep them in my bag. My hand was pulled back by the same force, and it remained in the exact position it was in before. I looked up to him, about to raise a question.

But it died in my throat when I saw his face, his eyebrows pulled together with pressed lips that dissolved into a sheepish grin the moment our eyes met. I tried to tug my hand free, but to no avail; I couldn’t break free.

“I have to pack this up, and I need to use my hands for it” I explained as my other hand went around his to loosen his grip.

He sighed in a dramatic despair before loosening his iron-tight grip to just holding onto my fingers gently. He then took my fingers to his mouth to press a gentle kiss on them before leaving my hand hovering up in shock. I sat there frozen by his actions, and I could feel heat traveling all the way to my face through my neck. If my ears were exposed, people would have found them burning in a brilliant shade of red from his action.

I cleared my throat and dropped my hand quickly to shuffle through the papers to arrange them. He also started packing up the papers into the files after I arranged them to make the task much easier.

I looked at him through my lashes in between, but as if sensing my eyes on him, he held eye contact and smiled, which made me quickly divert my gaze from him, my cheeks heating. ‘God, I can’t believe I am acting like an 11-year-old with a crush,’ I told myself as my heart beat a few beats more per second and butterflies in my stomach.

‘I am acting way worse than the 11-year-olds, ’ I told myself, despairing as my cheeks refused to cool down to their normal color that isn’t resembling a cherry tomato mid-season.

“All done,” I said as I zipped my bag after stuffing the files inside. We stood up at the same time, and I found a hand coming in front of my vision. I raised my eyebrows in question, but he just wiggled his fingers and pointed to the bag I handed over, a bit hesitant. He slung the overpacked tote bag over his shoulder and held his other hand out in invitation. He squeezed my hand as I slid it back into his hands and almost instantly, the bond pulsed between us, alive and thriving, and the warm feeling that comes along with it.

I turned to the register to pay for my drink, but he quickly pulled me back, mumbling, “I paid for your cup before coming to you…”

He snorted at that. “Seriously? You thought about me as an almost problem being Lucas’s brother not some idol?”

He laughs at that comment but doesn’t add anything to that. I looked out of the window as he looked at his messages on his phone in the traffic. All I then heard was a quiet, defeated sigh.

“I am sorry, the restaurant I planned on taking you is closed today…. They are preparing for tomorrow; it’s the Bucheonnim Osinnal holiday tomorrow. It has amazing food along with privacy too…” He muttered, defeated. I hummed in response to him as he mulled over an alternative plan. I didn’t share my opinion because I don’t know more about the privacy required for idols in public places like restaurants without people or journalists catching up for the weekend’s hot headline.

“Hear me out!” He exclaimed, successfully pulling me out of my thoughts. I looked at him, a question at the tip of my tongue, but he beat me to it to explain his new idea. “I know how to cook decently. I can cook for us! And there wouldn’t be anyone to disturb or take photos. It’s a win-win situation”

“You? Cook?” I curiously asked. He turned to me to shoot me a look of hurt- mock hurt because his lips were twitching from trying to hold in a smile. “I know how to cook! It’s a basic skill, ok?”

“Yea? How good is your survival level cooking?” I teased him, already smiling.

“It’s pretty good, thank you very much!” He batted back as he kept his eyes on the road. “So, are you fine with home-cooked meals?”

“Yup,” I answered as we pulled over to an under ground parking of a building. It was then that the actual situation dawned to me and felt more real. As he killed the engine, I turned to him, “Don’t you live with your groupmates here? I don’t think they will like you bringing a random person home without notice.” I trailed off, unsure.

As much as I loved and agreed with him about the privacy their house provided, it completely slipped my mind that there were other people too living with him in his house. It was imposing on their privacy, entering into their shared space without permission or prior notice of the visit. And what if he lived with his soulmates and living with his group was a cover-up? That would make the situation more awkward than needed, especially since this is literally the first day of meeting.

He flashed me a reassuring smile, “Some of them do live with me, three others precisely. But we are on a short holiday, so they are in their hometown, not here. Besides, they wouldn’t mind their leader’s girl coming to visit the house, would they?”

‘Leader’s girl’

Hearing those words coming from his mouth so casually, as if it was always like this, made my stomach flip with nerves. Heat spread to my cheeks again and I looked to the side to hide my face from him.

He laughed softly at my reaction before opening the door and jogging over to my side to open mine. “Come on, let’s go before you melt into the seat from the heat from your cheeks”

I couldn’t believe the words that just came out of his mouth- a date, he says- and I couldn’t help but let out a laugh at that comment despite his clear attempt at flirting. At that, an idea, rather a mischievous idea, popped into my mind as I grinned,

“Man, flirting and taking to the house on the first date itself? Scandalous behaviour, Chris! Not gentlemanly at all. Imagine if someone heard you say that? They would think-” I was cut off my playful chiding when he suddenly came closer and cupped my mouth to stop the words from spilling any further.

Despite only being a few inches taller than me, I had to look up to meet eyes. I burst out laughing when my eyes finally met his; his eyes were wide and mortified at my words, and I could literally see his face turning light pink to beet red. I didn’t bother trying to move his hand because by the time I stopped laughing, he dropped his hand and crouched down to the floor on the side, hiding his face from me.

“Please stop,” He pleaded as his voice came out muffled from covering his face.

I smiled in victory. It was funny to watch him, the one who flirted so confidently, just collapsing from the rebuttal of his flirting. “What? Can’t handle ‘your girl’ flirting back?”

It was finally his turn to groan in embarrassment. He probably wasn’t expecting me to actually flirt back at him this early into the meeting. The universe then decided to pity the guy and save him as the elevator door opened to his floor, making him stand up by mumbling a small ‘thank god’ before speed-walking to his door. He made sure I was following him by glancing back for a second before whipping his head back as fast.

“Don’t run away from your date or your girl as you said, Mr. leader…” I called out as I trailed behind him. I saw him stop for a second before walking ahead faster than before.

I snorted out at the reaction. From the distance behind him, I could see his ears burning bright red in flustration. He stopped in front of the door and punched in the code at a furious speed before holding the door open, inviting me in.

“Welcome to my home…” he muttered softly as he took out a pair of slippers and kept in front of me before removing his shoes.

“Thank you,” I replied as I slipped my feet into the slippers. He went inside and dropped my tote bag into the couch before turning to me.

“Do you want something to drink first? Coffee? Maybe tea, you had a lot of coffee today…” he suggested nervously.

“I just need water, thank you” I replied as I followed him in. Despite his warning that it might be a bit messy because they all share a place, there didn’t seem to be anything out of place. I walked into the living room and found the couch facing a big TV, along with some gaming consoles kept on the stand. The apartment was big, but it made sense since there were four of them sharing it together. There were some personal touches too in there; like the big woolen blanket thrown onto one side of the couch, different weights that are kept at the very corner of the living room with a rolled-up yoga mat, paintings that I am sure are not bought, a flower vase on the table with fresh flowers, warm light lamps, house plants that looks real at first glance, etc etc.

It looks like home. Somewhere you wish to be when the day weighs heavy on you, or you just need the familiar comfort. Although those were small, barely noticeable add-ons, they said a lot about the people living here and their efforts to make this their peaceful sanctuary amid the fast-paced, tiring industry they work in.

Chan came back with a cup of water as he ushered me to sit on the couch before handing me the water. “I will be back, yeah? I have to change these clothes to cook something. Feel free to explore the place.” With that, he turned and walked away into a hallway, which I guess are the rooms for the guys. I made my way to the kitchen to keep the cup there.

I then walked around the living room, admiring the paintings that were done by one of the guys, if I am sure, Hyunjin, from the knowledge I have of being a stay. Although I don’t spend that much time on artworks to be called an artist or painter, those paintings look amazing with the depth of color and different techniques.

But one feeling that stood out more was the feeling of deja-vu. It was as if I have seen this place before. It’s the very vague familiarity you get when you experience it again, and then your brain halts and says, ‘we have done this before,’ and tries to rewind from where but comes up short. It was as if I knew this place way before, as if I had made my way through here way before and had seen all these things inside.

Maybe that feeling was just because I am associating this place with the feeling of Chan? The warmth, the knowledge, and the familiarity? Maybe that’s the reason all of this seems too familiar.

A voice startled me out of my admiration through my thoughts, “Hey, I am finally awake… What’s up?” I smiled in barely concealed excitement, knowing that he was finally awake for me to spill everything that went down this morning.

“I met this guy..” I started, and he interrupted me with a dry and teasing voice, “You are finally out of the house for other than work and groceries?”

“Hey, I am not that bad; I go out occasionally,” I protested in my mind, my voice pitching high in defense. “Debatable topic, but carry on; what was special about this guy?”

“Lemme make this short, turns out he was my soulmate!!” I mentally squealed the information. “Wait- wait, for real? You met one of them?” He questioned; I sighed in relief because all I could feel from his side was equal excitement mirroring my own and impatience for me.

A laugh bubbled out of me which I couldn’t retain, “Yea, I was surprised too..”

He paused for a second before asking, “Is it the artist you met?”

I frowned at that question; he seemed genuinely curious whether it was the artist, “Isn’t he with you? I thought you all lived together”

“We are on a holiday you know, he went to his home and I am in mine..” He explained gently, his tone softening.

“Oh, but it’s not him; the artist, I mean. I don’t even know if you know this guy who is my soulmate or if he is connected to you.” I mumbled out my thoughts as he hummed as response.

“Anyways, we both are connected by a red thread! I didn’t even know I had a thread to be honest.” I clarified the type of bond, feeling giddy about it.

“Happy for you, love truly,” he said, his tone sincere. I could feel the undercurrent of quiet longing slipping into our shared space, but I didn’t bring it up to him, knowing that bringing it up would ruin his emotions.

“Now, miss lover, go back and talk with him; don’t scare him offf” He called off teasingly.

I clenched my sleeve at that nickname but didn’t say anything about it because I knew the moment I protested against it or denied it, he was going to use it all the time.

I let out an Exaggerated gasp, for the dramatic effect, of course. “I do not scare people off!!”

“Huh huh,” he replies sarcastically before bidding me goodbye and good luck. I let out a chuckle at that. I froze in my tracks when I turned around to the kitchen and found Chan already standing there with an apron tied and washing some vegetables. He lifted his eyes to meet mine and gave a small smile before pointing to the high chair near the counter.

I was expecting questions as soon as I sat down, but he gave me some space to make up my mind. I knew in my mind that it was weird or concerning, to say the least, to find someone stuck in one spot staring at a painting for God knows how long. I kinda wished he asked me about it so I could explain the telepathic connection with my soulmate, but he remained a gentleman and didn’t ask anything. I let out a sigh at that thought.

“Your soulmate?” he questioned, his eyes on the vegetable he had started to cut up on the counter, standing opposite me. My eyes widened at his question. ‘How did he even know? I didn’t mention the nature of my bonds to him until now’ I thought as I rewound my entire interaction with him to figure it out.

He chuckles lightly at my surprised reaction. “I know that look on the face when talking to soulmates. Telepath probably?”

“Oh my god! Yes,” I replied, still stuck in that haze of surprise.

“One of my soulmates has that connection, so that’s how I know just from the reaction,” he clarified. That made so much sense. Before I could say anything, he continued, “I learned that very intense, frowned looks while spacing out on people usually means that a mental conversation was going on…”

“You notice a lot!” I mumbled to myself, but he picked on it.

That’s my job!” he said while looking up and giving me a wink. I was not expecting that wink out of nowhere and let out a startled laugh at that reaction.

He shook his head as he resumed cutting his vegetables. “Can you do me a favour?”

“Yeah”

He then pointed towards the balcony that overlooked the buildings with his knife, “There is a charger on the swing there, can you go fetch it?”

I agreed to that and made my way to the balcony door. I was expecting it to be open but was pleasantly surprised to see the balcony was closed off with a heavy glass shielding against most of the harsh weather conditions. I looked around the balcony and lord, it was the coziest place I have ever seen. With glass covering the overhead and front, it didn’t compromise the view at all; there was a cushioned swing with pastal coloured cushions and some painting canvases with a bunch of stationery scattered on a small table.

“You can open that if you want and stay there for a while; it’s nice!” Chan’s voice rang throughout the balcony as I looked around for any button or a remote of opening it. Giving up, I turned to explore the canvases left there, some entirely done and some still in the starting stages of the painting.

I passed the paintings one by one, impressed, not giving a second thought to the subjects of the painting. I came to a halt when I came face to face with a very familiar scene, a scene that seemed to have taken life on the canvas. My breath got knocked out of me the longer I looked at the painting. The more I stared at it, the more uncomfortable I became.

The painting was undeniably Hyunjin’s style, the same style as the ones in the living room. But the subject of the painting baffled me to the core. It was a painting of a woman, sure, nothing bad about it, right? But that woman carried an uncanny resemblance to me.

"This is bullshit," you said as you stepped over rubble and debris, each crack of broken wood and knock of stone-on-stone echoing in the emptiness of the half-built, long-abandoned, would-be luxury tower block.

Minho said nothing and continued walking ahead of you.

"I said this is bullshit."

"I heard you." The reply came without him turning back to look at you. "What do you want me to do about it?"

"I told you we should get our own fucking house."

"Did you win the lottery or something?"

"Shut up, Mouse!"

"You shut up, Sixteen. Unless you've suddenly come into a shitload of money, you know as well as I do that we can't move out. Not one of the six of us can afford to leave."

"Yeah but tramping into this fucking derelict piece of shit demo site just so we can fuck uninterrupted is the pits. How has it fucking come to this?"

"If you'd learn to keep quiet…"

"Don't blame me! You're as bad as I am!"

Minho stopped. Turned. Raised an eyebrow.

"Oh shut up!" you retorted with a loud stomp of your foot.

You shooed him on as you caught up and he started up the concrete stairs to the first floor. You kicked each step with your boot and grumbled to yourself. "Couldn't even get a stupid fucking love motel or something, no, couldn't possibly have sex in a bed, rubble is much more fucking roman-"

"You think a bed in a cheap fuck motel would be better than this? Really? You want to lie down on a thousand other people's cum and piss and god knows what else?"

"No."

"I don't see you coming up with any other solutions, either."

"My solution is we tell the guys to fuck all the way off and leave us alone for like, one night."

"Good luck with that."

Minho scoffed. "Besides, correct me if I'm wrong, but you were the one who tried to fuck me in a squalid villa while we were supposed to be working. Don't pretend you're above this."

"That was then."

"What, you've got standards now?"

Your turn to scoff. "Standards? You think fucking you is having standards?"

He turned again. His dead-eyed stare. "Why do I ever do anything for you?"

"Because you love me!" In a high-pitched, childish whine.

He grunted.

He had never actually said it. Nor had you. You knew. You both knew that you both did. You just hadn't said it. Didn't need to be said, you guessed. You didn't miss it. Didn't need it. Didn't matter. Not really. He was an 'actions speak louder than words' guy anyway. He had scouted this shitheap demolition project to find you some privacy for the grand price of 'it's free'. That was enough.

"Oh." You turned the corner of what would have been a corridor and it was clear he had been there before.

A table, one leg missing but propped up against leftover breeze blocks. A sofabed big enough for two.

"What was that you were saying about a bed with a thousand other people's cum on it?" you asked, gingerly poking a finger into the cushion.

"I'll have you know that came from a pet-free, smoke-free home. Hyunjin and I carried it up here ourselves."

You eyed him sceptically.

"We cleaned it."

"With what?"

"A steam cleaner."

"Where the fuck did you get a steam cleaner?"

"Chan has one."

"Why does Chan have a steam cleaner?"

Minho shrugged. "He's that kind of guy."

"So, what?" you asked. "This is our secret, private paradise?"

"No. It's a sofa in an abandoned construction project, but it's all we've fucking got."

When he looked at you this time, it wasn't the cold, hard-edged gaze you'd come to love. It was steely but protecting something much softer beneath. Doubt glimmered in the sunset reflecting in his eyes.

"Do you want to go home?" he asked quietly.

You sat down on the sofabed, kicked off your boots. "No."

You patted the space next to you. He sat. Kicked off his trainers but kept his socked feet resting on the heels. Silence curled up beside you, heavy and disappointed.

"I'm sorry-" you and he said at once.

"I'm a brat," you continued.

"You are, but you're also right. I'm sorry that this is all we have. Trespassing in a falling-down building because we live with four other men in an apartment built for three. It's fucking bullshit."

"It's fine. It won't be forever."

"It won't." Doubt replaced by defiance. "I promise you. One day, we'll have our own house. As many rooms as you like."

"Can we have a pool?"

"We can have two pools."

"One indoor and one outdoor so we can swim all winter."

"And a sauna."

"Of course, a sauna. And more bathrooms than bedrooms just to show off."

"And a gate at the front with a gatehouse."

"And a small annexe apartment where the guys can live."

Minho laughed. "We'll give them one each."

"Very generous of us."

"We'll be filthy rich, so we can afford it."

Your smiles faded as did the dream. The high ceilings of your fantasy mansion were replaced with empty ceilings and open steel beams. Marble floors with dusty concrete. Two pools with large, stubborn puddles that still held water from the rain two days ago.

"I mean it," Minho said quietly, taking your hand in his. "We're gonna get out of here. Live a proper life."

You nodded. "I know… This is ok for now, though."

"The brat has decided she's satisfied, has she?"

He smirked and you smirked back.

"Not even close," you answered. "Get on your knees."

He grabbed you behind yours and pulled hard, flopping you onto your back. It wasn't a king-sized bed with thousand-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, in a large bedroom suite in the south-facing wing of a house high on a hill with panoramic mountain views. It was derelict and dirty and not really technically any more private that your bedroom in your shared apartment.

But it was, for the time being, yours. Yours and his and love's.
