Tips On How To Sew On Embellishments
Hi everyone. Today is the 1 year anniversary of me writing the Sewing-Online blog. I really can't believe how quickly the time has gone. I love writing these weekly blog posts as it gives me a chance to talk sewing with you all plus I love to scour the Sewing-Online website to find out the latest sewing products on the market so that I can tell you all about them.
Here is a link to the first ever post I wrote for this blog on 7th September 2011. I introduced myself a little back then but I'm sure as the months have passed you have all found out lots more about me by my writing both here on the blog and also on the sewing-online Twitter and Facebook accounts. You now know things such as.... I have a huge fabric stash that I can't bear to get rid of (I tell myself one day I'll use each and every piece of treasured material), I am completely polka dot mad and if I see something polka dot available on our site I always share the news with you (like the gorgeous polka dot bias binding we now stock! WOW!) and that I absolutely love to gather links from around the world wide web (Each day on our social media accounts you will find me sending out updates full of links to something click worthy about sewing, knitting , patchwork, etc).
Today's post was the inspiration of the wonderful Lynne of Dollie Babies Knits For Newborns. A few weeks ago when I asked on our Facebook page if anyone had any blog post ideas for me Lynne suggested a post about how to sew on embellishments. So here it is, as promised.
I have been busy finding useful links for you all that will hopefully provide you with all the embellishment sewing know-how that you will need. :o)
Before I list of all those great links for you all , I just want to say that you should definitely pop over to Lynne's website and have a look at the amazing little knitted outfits she makes for premature babies and children's dollies. So back to the tips on sewing on embellishments. There are lots of sorts of things that you might add to your craft projects to add that finishing touch. My favourite embellishment is polka dot ribbon and there are not many of my sewing projects that manage to avoid turning spotty in the end. I have got nearly the full range of colours in the 6mm Celebrate Pre-Cut grosgrain polka dot ribbon in my sewing stash and I use those ribbons generously. :o)

If you fancy adding a Braid trim to something then watch this you tube video 'How To Sew With Braided Trim'.
Sequin and Lurex Trims look very fancy but they can be hard to sew onto garments. There are some tips in the eHow article 'How To Sew a Sequin Trim'.
I think most people love the look of Lace Trim on a project, I know I do. It looks so elegant and expensive. There are some lace sewing tips on the Eras Of Elegance website.

We sell loads of different Patches and Motifs here at Sewing-Online and in this Wikihow article you will find some tips on sewing on motifs using a sewing machine.
If you would like to add some Microbead trim to your sewing project I would probably suggest hand sewing it on with tiny stitches. I have looked for some tips for how to sew it on but unfortunately couldn't find any. You can't beat adding some Beads and Sequins as an embellishment to your sewing project. They can be time consuming to sew on but they do look very pretty. This video 'How To Sew Sequins' by Roz from Sew Much Fun will give you some good guidance on how to successfully add sequins to your project. I love Ribbon Bows and I think they look so sweet when added to kid's clothes and other creations. I have tried to find sewing tips about how to attach ribbon bows and even Ribbon Roses to garments but have managed to only find one link! Must be everyone is keeping their sewing secrets to themselves. Here is the only link I could find and it is a video that shows a larger size ribbon bow being sewn onto a doll's sleeping bag.
I love Buttons and we have plenty of them for sale in our online sewing store. They make great embellishments and if you are unsure of how to sew on a button then just have a glance though the WikiHow article which has lots of clear photos to guide you.

A few other embellishments we sell that would look gorgeous adorning your latest project are Ruched Rosettes, Ribbon Flowers with Petals and Pearl Rosettes. I would personally hand sew them on with tiny stitches and make sure that I use as many stitches as I can get away with but without having the threads visible. Another option would be to try using a fabric glue such as Hemline Trim It Glue to attach the embellishments.
