Man, have you seen the dark circles Majima’s sporting!? They’re prominent.
In Yakuza 0, at age 24, Majima is depicted as an insomniac, a symptom of the trauma inflicted upon him during his torture and imprisonment in Anagura. And though the passing of time dulls the immediacy of this particular trauma (hardening him with the infliction of fresher wounds and instilling in him a rebelliously cynical resilience), his sleeplessness nevertheless persists.
By Yakuza 1 - 3, when Majima is in his 30′s and 40′s, Majima’s head is a noisy place – more tumultuous and more frenetic than his careless, cock-eyed persona lets on – and if he goes unoccupied for too long, his thoughts tend to ricochet back to old open wounds and, specifically, speculations about his imprisoned sworn brother. And even when he’s not considering these more personally weighty subjects, he’s simply restless-minded – skull like a pinball machine, abuzz with the bright neons of Kamurocho, and spinning in a constant whirlwind of violence and crime (or ‘business,’ if you will). Constantly ‘on,’ it’s difficult for him to turn off for long periods of time. Generally, he’s the type to catnap now and again, burn the candle at both ends, and go, go, go until he finally exhausts himself. When at last he does collapse, he’s generally a sprawler, the type to take up the whole mattress, limbs flung spread eagle, and snore (partially the result of a broken nose heeling slightly crooked). Out like a light. He is, occasionally, a comical sleep-talker and koala-hugger. When he does get a full night sleep, he generally awakens groggy and slightly sullen.
As Yakuza 4 - 6 roll around, and Majima’s approaching his 50′s, he’s a bit more at peace. Certain loose ends in his past tie themselves up, and he assumes a certain air of maturity and gravitas in handling family affairs. Still not the type to get much sleep, though. Sits up at night smoking and contemplating.
