hello! why do you think sg having a twitch is suspicious? sorry if you’ve talked about this in depth before, i seem to have missed it.
(re: this post)
ah no worries! yeah when the first announcement came out that sg would be streaming on twitch, it definitely made some waves in certain parts in the fandom. tbh i'm not sure how i feel about it now -- we're a couple months into the whole sg streaming thing, and i'm still investigating if my initial suspicions really did hold water, or if i was just being reluctant and angry about change :/ but as for why i and many others were suspicious in the beginning, there were a few general reasons...
it was sorta questionable for smosh, a big-name channel/corporation, to move to a platform that feels more suited for smaller, independent creators (one two three)
around the time of the announcement, several former sg members were speaking out about how bad things got while they were in sg, so sg joining the same platform that their ex-members had retreated to felt like a slap to the face for many (one two)
smosh hiding their VODs behind paywalls and their emphasis on subscribing made it really seem like they were streaming solely for the money, rather than for any of the community-building purposes they were claiming (one two three four)
I was just thinking that when I saw his tweet . Sir please stop making me think about Wes. Also, I worry that they are supporting Wes behind closed doors
(re: this post)
ikr, like sure wes is a part of og sg history but :/ i don't wanna think about him if i can avoid it ._.
and i know some people will disagree but personally i can understand the idea of og sg still sorta "being there" for wes but i hate the idea of them "supporting" him. like i don't expect them all to cut ties w him bc there's just so much shared history but also,, i'd rather they cut ties with him than quietly choose to believe his word over son/ja's. i don't think they actually do support him—i think i've seen mari and sohin collab/work with sonj/a since she made her statement, and i imagine they wouldn't be doing that and posting about it if they didn't support her. but idk, joven nonchalantly posting clips with wes in them does concern me a bit...
i’ve been following some of the posts from more observant sg fans here on tumblr, and it seems like there’s a tradeoff between revenue from twitch streaming (subs and gifts) and lost revenue from decreased youtube viewership (twitch viewers who don’t want to rewatch content + us sad lot of disillusioned fans). i just wonder how worth it that business decision was, yknow
I think the girl power post was one where you tagged like “do you think smosh utilized girl power when...” in reference to “corporate!courtney” & a live where she said she wanted to eventually be in charge (i guess?) at smosh
(re: this post)
OH okay i think i found the post you’re talking about! and that tag wasn’t a dig at courtney, it’s just playing off the whole idea of “do you think ____ effectively utilized girl power”, where some people get praised for doing the bare minimum while simultaneously being complete assholes.
so in terms of smos/sh, like...... sometimes there’s an air of pride or like a vibe of “we made it and we’re kicking ass!!” around the channel/community. and while i’m super glad that sm/osh survived the defy explosion and that they were able to regain their footing on youtube, there’s still this icky coating of “nearly all the people who left the channel are talking about how they got screwed over!! and a specific person they pointed out as being toxic af is still on the channel!! fucking yikes!!” so imo we’re at the point where celebrating sm/osh for overcoming adversity and taking reign of the brand feels inconsequential, considering all the sg peeps who got fucked over in the process. a pyrrhic victory of sorts, imo
RE: That last ask, i think the dichotomy between the older and younger fan base thing is probably a big (if maybe subconscious) part of why people were upset about sgames and pit basically merging under Mythical. Before, it kinda felt like sgames had an older, more dedicated crowd while pit pulled in the newer, younger viewers, which led to a (IMO) nice balance between the two and also allowed the viewer to gradually make their way across that divide if they so chose. Now it’s all one thing 🤔
(re: this post)
OH that’s a big brain take there, anon!! like idk how true it is lol, just bc i know even in our lil smoshblr fandom we have tons of people who started watching sm/osh at different stages (aka before the introduction of squad, after, etc), and all at different ages as well. BUT ALSO this would explain that sort of division in the fanbase ? i mean there are probably more factors at play here but this makes sense to me, for sure
this is only tangentially related to the age thing but it seems the channels are struggling in large part due to the fact that they are all older, and so is the majority of their really dedicated fan base (or so it seems), but they’re trying to appeal to that younger audience (to me!!! i have nothing to go off of but vibes it’s not science or math). idk if that makes sense, but it seems like they’re stuggling to find that groove between their older, more solid & dedicated fans and those younger causal viewers who would probably get them trending, reinvigorate, etc.
(re: this post)
yknow what, yeah, i think you’re right. like this is just a tiny moment that i’m suddenly remembering, but recently the sg socials posted a clip that had sarah making a spongebob reference then saying smthn along the lines of, “shoutout to whoever got that reference!” and i remember thinking wtf?? that’s an iconic spongebob quote, ofc people are gonna get it!! but like........ if their intended audience is really That Young...... then it’s all too possible that that sort of reference would fly right over someone’s head.
and it’s not like sg has always catered to the younger fans, bc let me tell you, i did not understand 90% of the nerdy-ass retro gamer references og sg made back in the day, and i don’t think their intent ever was to say smthn that ~the majority of potential viewers~ would get.
and i could harp on and on about how that might make og sg more personal, and how current sm/osh will only fade into oblivion if they try to make content specifically for an age group which is very much not their own and which exists very unnaturally outside their breed of comedy/entertainment............ but hey, everyone sort of already expects that fans will grow out of watching smo/sh, and maybe at this point smo/sh is just sort of..... owning that.
