Shadow Kings - The Dark Ages

It’s not hard to find games that follow the multiplayer city/empire-building formula – offensive and defensive battles, recruiting soldiers and building resource farms, waiting for cool downs and timers. Shadow Kings: Dark Ages, a multiplayer town builder by Goodgame Studios, highly resembles other familiar games that share this formula. It took a few hours of gameplay before I realized that it wasn’t simply a copy-and-paste from other games of the same genre, however. There are some things that Shadow Kings does that I haven’t seen before, only I wish they would have capitalized on these differences to make them more meaningful.
The game drops you off on a plot of land and allows you to name your town and then walks you through a quick tutorial. After I was finally free to do as I pleased, I spent a while rearranging my town. Moving set pieces after they’ve been built comes in handy, as later on the game allows you to expand the town’s walls. Rearranging freely by being able to move and rotate pieces is a big plus.
There’s a mechanic in the game called Productivity, which is interesting. Having decorations increases happiness, therefore increasing productivity, which increases the rate at which you can recruit warriors and build things. Having a large population or being attacked can lower productivity. It’s an interesting balancing mechanic that I like.
Planning attacks and setting up defenses are my two favorite parts of the game. These are elements that I haven’t seen in a game like this before, so it’s new to me at least. Defending your city consists of recruiting defenders and building tools such as a cauldron of tar to pour onto attackers. The system goes deeper than simply building and recruiting, however. Your town is separated into three flanks – front, left and right. A number of defenders and defensive tools can be placed at each flank. Attacking another location works the same way. Recruit warriors to build your army, and build catapults and battering rams to crush your enemies’ walls. A number of warriors and offensive tools can also be planned to attack any of the three flanks of the defending city.
After figuring out how to work offense and defense, I started to realize how much of a chess match this system could be at higher level when I decide to attack other players and vice versa. When I decide to attack other players, should I focus all forces on one flank, or spread them out across two or all three? The other player could have left their left flank weak but heavily reinforced their front flank, so attacking the front could prove problematic, or attacking the left could mean a victory. Same thing when I’m planning my defenses – should I spread my defenses across all three flanks, or invest in one extremely strong flank? This kind of planning makes me want to keep playing in order to build a well-fortified city.
Unfortunately, this is where the cool things about Shadow Kings just aren’t cool enough. While all of this planning is fun, it seems pointless because I can’t actually see it being put to use. I was disappointed to discover that as opposed to other games of this kind, I couldn’t watch the battles that I had so carefully planned play out. Battles are nothing more than a screen that lets you know whether you were victorious or defeated. The battle report only shows how many casualties were taken and how much loot was collected. I really wish the reports would show how my plan worked by telling which flanks held up the best while defending or which of my flanking forces did the most damage while attacking.
This wasn’t the only let down. If this is a game you plan to sit and play for a while, be prepared to run out of resources and things to do. There are no gold mines, so an abysmal taxing system takes their place. Depending on how many citizens live in your city, which can be increased by building houses, you’ll either collect a large or small amount of taxes.
Taxes is collected at different intervals of time, based on when you plan on checking back or how long you plan on sitting and playing. Right now I’m at the point where I could collect five coins in three minutes, or 18 coins in 15 minutes, increasing in intervals until it takes five hours to collect 162 coins. Some intervals cost gems, that awful little currency that goes fast if you want to get anything done at all. But I’ll get to the gems in a sec. Obviously, not everybody can sit at their computer for five hours at a time, and not everyone wants to babysit their computer every 15 minutes. And if you take too long to collect your taxes, you start to lose some. Should I choose to go for 162 coins and leave my computer for five hours, I’d better find a way back to my computer by the time I lose everything and waste all that time.
The option to spend gems is given with everything you do, but that’s to be expected. Developers of these sorts of games have to make money, I get that. Where it tends to get ridiculous is when you want to start building multiple buildings at once and upgrading them.
The above image shows how many gems it costs to upgrade my construction crane to level 2. What that would allow me to do is build more than one building at a time. Most buildings only take up to two minutes so far, so it’s not a huge issue. I just need to be patient. But the fact that this is even an option is crazy. And you can only recruit so many warriors at once, but there’s another slot you could unlock for seven days at the cost of too many than I’m willing to give up.
The one thing that would definitely keep me coming back is if I could watch the battles, or at the very least see more detailed and meaningful statistics that show which resources affected which flanks the most. Shadow Kings isn’t bad, I just think a browser game like this is for a younger audience that may not have the cell phones that the mobile version can be played on. So far there isn’t enough incentive to play this game on a web browser, when this very game and others like it are available on my mobile device.
The web browser version of Shadow Kings: Dark Ages has some really cool things like arranging my city the way I want and planning my attacks and defenses according to which of the city’s flanks I want to exploit, but it seems to go downhill from there. The inconvenient tax system, the push for microtransactions, and one of the coolest things about the game proving to be quite pointless – the flank mechanic – all take away from what could be a fun browser game. I’m sure that playing on a mobile device would make for a better experience, and I’m actually willing to give that a shot next. My biggest hope is for an update in the future that allows me to watch these carefully planned battles unfold.
