Personality:
When they first entered Night Raven College, Ashley first appears to be incredibly paranoid and is very eager to leave Twisted Wonderland. They became quiet, tense, and timid as a result of the sudden transfer. Afterwards, Ashley ends up adopting a cynical, yet curious view on how the world works with magic. However, they appear to be quite intelligent, quick-witted, and creative both in class and outside. They’re also quite empathetic to others, being more than willing to help.
Ashley does loosen up as time passes, revealing that they’re passionate and enthusiastic in their interests relating to history, even being kind and loyal to those they’re close with. Despite this, they can be rather brash, shrewd, and a bit selfish, even having a hot-temper at times. Ashley is brave and resilient in the face of danger, but their bravery is tied between cowardice and recklessness. They’re psychologically damaged and traumatized due to their past experiences.
Lore (TW: Bullying, Death involving a car accident, slight racism from Ashley's family, unhealthy relationship dynamics with AshLis):
Ashley was born and raised by Chantana and Augustine Yang in Washington, D.C., living a happy childhood. This would all come crashing down when they were seven years old when they lost their parents in a fatal car accident - they were also in a car but survived, ending up in a coma for a month. While in a coma, they experienced vivid dreams and encountered strange beings. One of those beings is a young boy with hair like the moon and eyes like the dawn; they met him in the valley where various flowers are in bloom. Both children became close friends, having played together in the field and picked flowers (often white daffodils and poppy flowers), with the boy comforting the emotionally fractured Ashley.
By the time Ashley woke up from their coma, they were met with the teary eyes of their relatives. Since then, Ashley has to stay hospitalized for a couple days while their relatives debate on which side gets to keep them for 2 weeks. Ultimately, their mother’s older brother, Theodore Thacker, decided to take Ashley in; his main reason is so that Chantana’s relatives wouldn’t be burdened in having another mouth to feed but promised that both would visit in family reunions. Once Ashley was discharged, Theodore homeschooled his niece and used his computer to teach them subjects (math, english, science, history, etc.), which the child happily learned. History is usually the more prominent subject Theodore likes to teach because he is a history fanatic and works as a historian at the museum; his lessons in history had stuck onto Ashley. During work days, he would often bring Ashley to their relatives as part of the promise he made when they were hospitalized. Some of their relatives did take care of them when Theodore was busy, usually raising them as they would in traditional Lao families but a few others kinda shunned them due to her mixed blood.
At the age of 9, Theodore would sign Ashley up for summer camp to prepare them for middle school. Ashley was not very used to being in public due to being homeschooled in the past, even when they were brought in to their relatives. Because they were very quiet and shy, many kids ignored them, some even threw things to get a reaction from her. They often hung around camp counselors and stayed by themself, often times drawing pictures of their childhood dream with paper and crayons; the counselors thought that the boy could be an imaginary friend Ashley made up due to their loneliness. Then they met Lisbeth Graham, another lonely child who has been ignored by other kids. Their first meeting is quiet and awkward, but they soon warm up to each other and quickly become close friends; Ashley even showed Lisbeth their drawings and the girl found the silver haired boy somewhat interesting. By the time Ashley entered middle school, they learned that Lisbeth is attending the same school as them, which strengthens their bond. Their school life isn’t the best as they’re still ignored by their peers despite being more notable for their intellect; Lisbeth does notice this and takes advantage of the fact so that she can keep Ashley to herself. At this point in time, both kids have feelings for each other but are unsure how to approach it until Lisbeth confessed her feelings during a sleepover; Ashley reciprocates but they both have to keep their relationship a secret due to feeling shameful of falling in love with the same sex. High school is when things were starting to change with Ashley being more recognized for their intellect and creativity, as well as joining three school clubs (Asian club, history club, and the GSA). Ashley and Lisbeth both joined the GSA together and learned so much about LGBTQ+ after meeting the club members who were more than happy to educate them on sexualities and gender identities and even queer history. Lisbeth believed that she might be a lesbian as she prefers women but she then believes that she’s a polysexual lesbian. Ashley, on the other hand, believed that they’re demisexual bisexual; while this is true for both, it was under a naive perspective for both. Sometime in their sophomore and junior year, Ashley reflected on their past and gender identity: They believe they don’t fit in any gender binary and came out as genderqueer to Lisbeth, in which the girl supports them on their transition.
As the school year progresses, Ashley becomes more focused on their studies than before; Lisbeth catches on and becomes very annoyed that her partner is starting to ignore her. Lisbeth tries everything to spend some time with Ashley, even making them do things they don’t want to do such as drinking her mom’s vodka. These factors led to them getting into an argument, especially with Ashley signing up for university and working hard for their scholarship, and it eventually put a strain on their relationship. Afterwards, Ashley feels like a burden to Lisbeth, so they break up with her after graduation but wishes her the best. Trying to move on from their break up, all Ashley has to look for is their future and their family - they finally got accepted into a university and got roomed with Andrea Torres. But after a day of class, they were taken by a mysterious dark carriage while waiting for the bus.
