Wait, so do all fish need to keep swimming forever ?
No, there are other ways fish can breathe. Most sharks actually don’t have to, they can use buccal breathing, which involves pumping water over the gill slits with their cheeks. It’s only in some sharks (many of the better known species) that this doesn’t work, likely because it’s not as effective for the fast-moving, pelagic lifestyle. They still have spiracles (the organs to pump the water), but they’re unusable.
Non-cartilaginous fish (fish that aren’t sharks or rays) don’t have spiracles, they take in water through the mouth and push it out over their gills.
So most fish don’t have to swim to breathe, it’s just certain species of sharks who’ve evolved such that it’s the most effective method for them.
So I have a malachite piece, and it has some silvery scratches, is that normal ?
I’m not 100% sure. we’ve been holding off on adding Malachite to our collection because we’re searching for that right piece but if anyone here knows, can you help them out? Thank you!
