Steve ringing the doorbell was the first thing Sharon had heard in two hours that wasn’t the rain outside her apartment. The weather in Washington had suddenly turned pretty bad, but at least she could stay home, pretending she didn’t have a shift at the hospital.

“Hey, neighbour,” Steve greeted her with a smile. “I hate the cold, and I thought of watching a movie under a pile of blankets. I also made too much popcorn,” he added, holding two huge bowls of buttered popcorn.

“We can’t let those go to waste,” she agreed, smiling. “So, what are we watching?”

He pointed out a cluster of deer tracks on the dirt path in front of them, and turned to her with a grin. “Do you think they went up this way? Maybe we’ll see them at the top,” he said with his eyes brightening with enthusiasm. Sharon smiled faintly and nodded at his observation, though her mind was miles away. Her fingers brushed against the small velvet box tucked safely in her jacket pocket, and her heart fluttered as she thought about what she was planning to do.
