Hi! I just saw the post about Mary Sues and how that's not accurate most of the time. And I'm not sure I can agree with that. I am a woman, but I sometimes feel that not one female character is written as a MS. And I don't agree with Luke being one. I rewatched the OT at one time because of an argument. To me Rey was/is a MS in TFA (I didn't get to watch TLJ, but what I heard wasn't exactly reassuring). Sorry for my english. Thank you.
Um, you may want to rethink your stance then, because - and I love Luke Skywalker with everything in me, he is and always will be my favorite Star Wars character - but Luke is EVERY SINGLE embodiment of a Mary Sue.
- Teen in some backwater place gets entangled in Matters Of National/International/Galactic Importance? Check
- Teen is also magically part of some greater cosmic conspiracy/family tree linked to said Matters of Importance? Check
- Teen is also amazing and the BEST at whatever magic/sport/endeavor is relevant, despite not having studied at all in said practice? Check
- Teen is also fought after by a variety of Very Important People? Yep, check
- Teen also saves the world/galaxy/universe? So much check.
I mean, fuck, Luke even has the ridiculously fabulous name of Skywalker.
So, yeah, maybe you need to figure out what it is that you’re cool with Luke being a Mary Sue, but not Rey, and then get back to me. :)
