i understand i always talk about the silly part of it but i think the geuine reason why happysheriff appealed so deeply to me is because...well they both have the same goal, just in different fonts. sheriff and skittles are both caregivers, they just go about it in different ways. within a world of madness, skittles wants to bring some sense of normalcy and gentleness. sheriff wants to make sure his men are safe, and that whoever he can is comfortable under his eye.
i just think having sheriff see someone who genuinely, earnestly mean well die at his hands would absolutely wreck him. letting his brief ptsd flashback of his worse enemy lead him to murdering an innocent person...i think after realizing it all and backtracking his deep, deep mistake. there is so little good left in nevada, and he gunned down one of the last beacons of hope. i think it would linger in him for a while. he wouldn't talk about it, but his eyes would look more glossed over, they'd be more bottles of whiskey than normal.
and to pair that intense feeling of mourning someone purely because of your guilt with seeing this person come back, and they forgive you?
after being gunned down, they come back, more bright than ever, and they want to give you something still? they want to still be your friend? i don't think sheriff has experienced that kind of sympathy or forgiveness, we'll, to be frank ever. and you have a man who's so neurotic because he can't let this canary in the mine stop singing for him. he finally had another chance to fix a deep wrong, something not many people get, and if he can make sure that skittles is safe, that's what matters to him.
on the other hand, i think skittles despite living in nevada, seems unknown to the horrors. not in the sense that she can't tell what's happening, but rather she lives in this loop of her own delusion to keep herself sane. if there's no joy, than what's the point? i always like to think skittles never even met sheriff before she went into that office. a bit creepy, sure, but she saw a public figurehead with mixed reviews. she thought if anyone in nevada needed something nice, it'd be the one keeping us all together, right?
they're both very gentle and sweet people, and they get lost within eachother trying to make sure the other party is okay. and when they finally start getting close...and skittles understands he's not just a strong leader but a scared man, and when sheriff finds out skittles harbors a deep emotional whirlwind and not just a candy interior...i think they'd both realize just how much they needed the other.
