The Mary-Culverton Connection
This came to me last night as I was falling asleep, and I don’t think I’ve ever stumbled upon a similar assertion so I’m throwing it out there for you brilliant people to analyze and tear apart.
Culverton is also a mirror for Mary.
Both are secretly assassins
Both are two-faced, projecting warm and friendly normality to cover the fact that they are manipulative murderers
Both pretend to like Sherlock publicly, but in private they drop the façade and admit they would kill him
Both try to kill Sherlock, and would have succeeded if not for John (you’ll never convince me Mary called the ambulance, I’d sooner believe Magnussen did)
Both treat Sherlock in a patronizing way, joking or making light at inappropriate times when Sherlock was obviously upset.
Both have witnessed Sherlock high “for a case”
Both initially keep their secrets but then offer confessions, Mary on the USB stick, Culverton to the hidden voice recorder.
And although everyone associates John’s swoopy swish with Culverton’s, I argue Mary’s hair is much the same (although it was moreso in S3, but still):
Is Sherlock dreaming a Mary mirror? Culverton presents a likable image to the world but somehow still seems creepy and “off” somehow. He hides his murders in plain sight by using the morgue of the hospital like Mary hides her dark past by being with someone who “likes it,” and overlooks it by default.
I’m sure I’m missing some things, but I do see a lot of similarities there.
