westerners’ approach to disabilities is generally (blind) acceptance, shaming others for looking down on disabilities. that it’s harsh to judge how well a fish climbs a tree. so, generally ok, though overall there is a slight dislike.
asians... are kind of more like raging disdain, man. disabilities are seen as a liability, and because of the general idea of ‘karma’, a lot of mothers are shamed for bringing a child like that into the world, and families are shamed too. people are expected to pull their own weight on top of the parent’s as well, so if someone can’t do just that, it’s bad. in general, a lot of extreme, quiet and open dislike to them. discrimination is rampant but is considered acceptable, along with the ‘they are better off not here’ sort of thought.
which is why koe no katachi (the manga) seems extreme and unbelievable to westerners, but totally within the realm of reality to asians.
