INTRODUCING ARTIST Hagere Selam 'shimby' Zegeye-Gebrehiwot (Addis Ababa / Winnipeg): shimby is a self and community taught artist from Winnipeg. They make experimental shorts on 16mm and super 8mm and have exhibited their films at festivals, in galleries, on laundry room appliances and on storefront windows the world over. Their practice is meditative, diasporic and deeply vested in community building. shimby is finishing a yearlong mentorship through MAWA (Mentoring Artists for Women's Art) and recently completed an 8 month studio based artist residency/open school program through the artist run centre Ace Art. They are presently working on a project with funding from the Winnipeg Film Group entitled Queer Talisman.

An experimental short film directed by Shimby and produced by NSOROMMA featuring the track “Black Love” by Gabriel Teodros & SoulChef with Sarah MK. This short film is a prequel to Gabriel Teodros & SoulChef’s upcoming albumEvidence Of Things Not Seen, being released October 28th. Black Love was a collaborative project between NSOROMMA, Gabriel Teodros, Sarah MK and Shimby, an emerging diasporic Ethiopian filmmaker. Shot over a few days on a 16mm camera the film was completely hand edited with no digital enhancements, and experimented on by the filmmaker using, among other things, dyes created from roses, frankincense and sage. Black Love is the first short film produced by NSOROMMA, a Black arts initiative that cultivates creative action and innovation in Black communities. Through incubating Black artists’ works and building archival strategies NSOROMMA ignites responsive dialogue and supports Black art, thoughts and movements.
