How long does a Shimla to Manali road trip take?
A Shimla to Manali road trip covers a distance of roughly 250 km, but how long it actually takes depends on which route you choose and how many stops you make along the way.
On the standard Mandi route — via Solan, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Kullu — the drive typically takes 8 to 10 hours if done in a single stretch. This route is wider, better maintained, and has more fuel stations and rest stops, which is why most time-conscious travelers choose it.
If you opt for the more scenic Jalori Pass route instead — via Narkanda, Luhri, and Banjar — the journey stretches slightly longer to about 270 km and takes 10 to 12 hours, since the roads are narrower and less consistently maintained. This route is also weather-dependent and can close entirely during heavy snowfall, so it's not always a reliable option in winter.
That said, most experienced travelers don't recommend covering the entire distance in one day. A two-day drive — with an overnight halt in Mandi — is the more comfortable option. It breaks up the long hours behind the wheel and leaves room for worthwhile stops like Tattapani's hot springs, Narkanda's early mountain views, or a detour through Manikaran before continuing on to Manali.
Road conditions, season, and how many photo stops or detours you plan for all affect the total time, so it's worth building some buffer into your schedule rather than treating it as a fixed number.
