There was a definite sigh that passed between lips as a frown etched itself onto his face and Shikamaru tipped his head to the sky pondering on where this conversation was leading. After a gruelling day of training, with some difficult tasks assigned by Asuma, it was beginning to sound like something troublesome and he had no intention of getting himself locked into it if so, preferring the idea of a game of shogi or taking some time to be at peace after their exhausting day. 

“What's that supposed to mean?” he asked, bringing one hand up to rub against the back of his neck, easing the tension out from his muscles as he kneaded fingers against skin. “What else am I supposed to use?”

shikaku looks at the pouting face of inoichi’s kid, the closest to a niece he’ll ever have. he can hear shikamaru and chouji a bit further up into the forest and since he knows yoshino surely is with them, he allows himself to stop to deal with ino’s feelings. 

(kids. they got a lot of those, feelings. but he knows that if he wants all three of them to grow up and not end up as fucked up as him and some of his comrades, they, as parents, got to tend to their emotions.) 

it’s their day of babysitting, after all, and conflict resolution is both part of parenthood and friendship building. he figures a little heart to heart with ino can’t do any harm. 

“what happened?” he asks, as he sits on a rock, clasping his hands together. “what don’t they believe you about?”
