Review of Shiny Coin’s S/T Cassette

Launching on april 3rd, This tape by Shiny Coin from Melbourne is a mix of garage-y, poppy tunes that are both a weird mix of moody (yet danceable) tunes, they released a 4 song demo in Feb of last year, which was a well played release in my car for a long period of time (before the car decided that it didn’t want a stereo anymore and carked it).

The tape opens up with NBA jam (i assume the SNES title of the same name which is awesome), upon first listen, the first thing i notice is the incredible tonally deep sound of the guitar and bass, its so thick sounding, it sounds really great through headphones or speakers. the vocals are sung in such a swingy, weaving way, contrasting to the straight lined beats of the drums and rhythm section. there are tinges of doo-wop, surf-rock mixed with punk and pop sounds. a good plethora of genres included. the drums sound quite far away, which i feel is interesting to note, there is a layer of reverb on the drums, which really is why i think of surf rock and the like, the drumming is very scissor cut, which i really like, the beat is so on point and sharp. the bass tends to take more of a melodic stance over the guitar in the sense that the guitar is playing chords while the vocalist uses both as one instrument (the way i see it) while the bass walks and does these interesting little explorations of melody.
