The courtyard is lit: lanterns hung along the arches, the carriage waiting just beyond the steps, the coachman poised to start their journey.

As they cross the stones, the strap of Verity's right heel slips from where she'd hastily fastened it.

Wyll stops her with a gentle hand on her waist and sinks to his knees before she can protest.

“Leave it, we're already late,” she starts, smiling with affectionate exasperation.

“It'll only take a moment,” he says, not looking up.

He steadies her ankle, fingers warm against her skin, and adjusts the clasp with quiet care. Her hand lifts, settling in his hair without thought. He leans into it slightly, finishing the fastening, checking it once more before letting his hand rest there for a moment.

“There,” he says.

He doesn’t rise right away. Lifting his head, he draws her palm toward his face and places a tender kiss in its center.

Verity’s breath shifts, subtle but uneven. Something in her expression flickers—uncertain, almost—but she schools her expression back to a soft smile. She's still floored, sometimes, by his attention and tenderness; still unsure how to receive his sweetness.

Wyll glances up then, a faint smile pulling at his mouth. He presses his cheek against her torso for a heartbeat before standing in one smooth motion, his hands settling briefly at her waist as if to steady her before he lets go.

Verity swings her foot, testing the strap. It holds. She meets Wyll's eyes, watching him for a moment. Without warning, she launches herself into his arms and wraps her own around his neck.

He exhales a quiet laugh, arms tightening around her. “We are well past the appropriate hour now.”

Verity hums, unconcerned, admiring his mismatched eyes. “You started it.”

“By fixing your shoe?”

“By being unbearably sweet about it.”
