My German mother at the start of World War Two
A colorized version of a circa 1939 black and white photo showing Krystal Bartels (my aunt) on the left, and her sister Elly Bartels (my mum) on the right.
They grew up in Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
A happy day in their lives 🙂
My mother came to England in 1950 and lived at 10 Queen Street, Dover.
She gave birth to me in Shorncliffe Military Hospital in nearby Folkestone on January the 3rd, 1951.
Sadly, my mum passed away on the 15th of September 2012 but she is, of course, forever in my thoughts.
A quick visit to Shorncliffe Pier this afternoon with @ameriaus_food 👏 Was hoping for more colour in the sky but was happy to make do with what was on offer 👌. . #shorncliffepier #shorncliffe (at Shorncliffe pier)
30 August 1917 - Letter to Folks at Home from Shorncliffe, England
For the first time in a while, Fred was able to provide his address. He had left France and arrived at Shorncliffe Camp but expected to head to Witley Camp very soon. Fred describes his recent observation work between Lens and Lille, including the concrete shelters taken from the Hungarian forces and the 'limitless' gunfire their side was sending to their opponents, and the extensive "counter-battery work" on both sides.
Fred then informs his family that he received his leave warrant on August 26th, traveled to Boulange and then took a boat to Folkstone before travelling to London. He tried to see his brother Frank, but was unable to connect with him before Fred had to leave the city. Fred goes on to note that he would be having two weeks of leave and then would be waiting to start the next available officer training course. He concludes with a few details about visits with friends before promising to write again soon.
