Turner Syndrome Support Society [UK] helps with practical information on living daily with TS and can in most cases offer contact with other girls and women with TS and their families.

It's Turner Syndrome (TS) Awareness Day today. Approximately 1 in 2000 women are born with this chromosome abnormality and, based on that, there could be as many as 16,077 women in the UK alone who are living with TS.  Many go undiagnosed or are diagnosed too late to get the most from any possible treatment. Please pass on to raise awareness.

Short Happens Day 11 - Turner Syndrome Awareness

Gah! Lost power yesterday right as I was fixing to cross post this from Facebook. So here it is.... Short Happens Day 11: Here is something I didn't even know! Your interesting TS fact of the day! From Genetics Home Reference: "Turner Syndrome occurs when one normal X chromosome is present in a female's cells and the other sex chromosome is missing or structurally altered. Because the SHOX [or short stature homebox...TEHE] gene is located on the sex chromosomes, most women with Turner syndrome have only one copy of the gene in each cell instead of the usual two copies. Loss of one copy of this gene reduces the amount of SHOX protein that is produced. A shortage of this protein likely contributes to the short stature and skeletal abnormalities (such as unusual rotation of the wrist and elbow joints) often seen in females with this condition." HUH! And here I thought short stature was largely due to a non functioning pituitary gland.

Short Happens Day 10: I know, I know. I missed a day. I am getting together some great stories to share for next week, so for this week (per request), I will be going through some unusual/interesting facts about Turner Syndrome! Today's factoid is brought to you by EndocrineWeb! Turner syndrome was first discovered in 1938 by Dr. Henry Turner while he was studying a group of seven girls who all had the same unusual developmental and physical features. BONUS for missing a day. Also, to date, there is still no known underlying cause for TS or a way to prevent it.

Short Happens Day 5 - Turner Syndrome Awareness

Short Happens Day 5: Hollie asks if TS girls just see a GP, or if we have doctors who specialize in TS. Another great question, dear! TS girls typically see an endocrinologist throughout life. Endocrinologists are specifically trained to treat those TS as TS primarily effects the reproductive and endocrine systems. However, many also see a regular Ob/Gyn or cardiologist, as well as any other specialists needed to deal with individual issues that may arise (needing a hip replacement for example).
