how each of the legends got into the games.

in light of what i have recently learned about how legends enter the game (either through blisk, backing, or trials), here are my headcanons for how each legend got into the games! 

i will not be including loba, revenant, crypto, or rampart seeing as how we have canon lore for each. 

bangalore: anita went through the preliminary trails in order to get into the games. no one knew who she was after she landed in the outlands, so they had no reason to believe in her ability. not all soldiers are professional, after all, and i think blisk would have shrugged at her mention of the imc. definitely had to prove her worth. 

lifeline: was offered backing by apex executives, but turned it down in favor of the preliminary matches. due to her family being so well renowned, she could have gotten in relatively easily. the executives weren’t shy about the idea of being endorsed by lifeline’s very wealthy family. ajay was quick to tell them she and her family no longer spoke to one another and that she didn’t need them to get her through the door. 

caustic: caustic was actually scouted by apex executives following his appearance in the outlands. he originally had no desire to compete in the games, seeing them as an uncouth, unnecessary manner of studying death. but apex execs wanted a ‘villain’ character and due to how difficult it would be to continue his studies without kidnapping and killing civilians, the games seemed the safest way to not only law low, but to pursue science. 

octane: wound up being backed by the apex executives. like caustic, he was scouted, but not in depth. because his death defying stunts were all over social media and the internet, it wasn’t hard for them to find him and decide he was a good fit. the fun dare devil that they could make into toys and maybe receive sponsorship from his parents pharmaceutical company if needed. following his accident, they reached out to him, and he agreed only to sate his boredom. 

gibraltar: gibraltar had to prove his worth but was actually hesitant to join the games at first. he knew how many of his friends had not made it through the preliminary matches, how many that fell prey to the fame. after watching it happen enough, he decided it would be worth the risk to keep them all safe. he was recognized by many other competitors and he passed through the preliminaries not only for his skill, but for the way he really took to the teamwork. 

mirage: elliott originally had to earn his way into the games but after blisk realized he was the son of evelyn witt, he waived his need to compete in the preliminary matches. the executives still had him go through the first few rounds in order to start his marketing campaign (they could see that he would be a fan favorite quickly) but they couldn’t overrule blisk for long. 

bloodhound: bloodhound obviously was completely unknown. there was no record of them to be found and they refused to tell the entry level proprietors anything other than they were on a mission from the allfather. still, they had the tech, they had the time, and it wasn’t long until they climbed through the ranking at lightning speed. their abilities were incredible to watch -- almost godly, if you will. 

wattson: was given a calling card by blisk. blisk was well acquainted with dr. paquette, her father, and upon hearing the news of his death, sought out natalie. he offered her a place in the games knowing she shared her father’s intellect and knowing that, with him gone and the ring complete, that she had little else going on. in order to keep the paquette genius on the side of the games, he made her a shoe in. 

pathfinder: pathfinder was offered backing but turned it down in order to work his way through the preliminary games. having a MRVN play would definitely be interesting and pathfinder had such a great personality. he wanted as many people as possible to see him, though, in the event his creator might be watching! and though everyone would be watching the games, he wanted to make sure his name got to the furthest corners of the outlands they could! 

wraith: wraith had to earn her way into the games. they originally debated on even letting her compete (some of the syndicate recognized senior science renee blasey after all) on the basis that she couldn’t even give them her name. however, they couldn’t continue this excuse for long with bloodhound who blatantly refused to give up any personal information about themselves being allowed to compete. so they begrudgingly let her through and she quickly made her mark.

Silence

It lingers, Darkness around, A moment in time, Then it’s gone. Replaced by a mass of sound, That never quite dies down no matter what you do, Enough? Not enough? Too much? Too little? I can’t quite comprehend, My mind falls and rises, Then drops to a zero. I can’t be seen, I can’t be heard, If you did you’d... Be here maybe, Be there again. I can’t comprehend. I don’t want it. I crave it. Silence. Noise. Dark. Light. So many thoughts. Images. Feelings. Emotions. It’s overwhelming, I seek out more. but mostly.. it’s just.. Silence.

Who here... has a clean conscience. Who’s back is completely free from sin? Who here has not lived to regret what has been and wished they could go back and redo it... But resets on the surface are not usually a thing. And even if they were.. What would give -you- the right to reset a timeline.. to force everyone to go back from when they were, whether good, bad, or neutral. Would that really make you a better person than one who had not done those things? If you were to reset, knowing what you had done, does it really erase what you did the first time around? How can it? Your body may not bear witness to it. But your mind... your mind has seen it. Has seen the consequences, for you need to remember it in order to know not to do it again do you not?  Does anyone here.. really feel they are pure. Untainted by the curse that emotions and feelings and general humanity or monstrosity lays upon us? So then why... why when it is not your job, do you feel the need and the want to judge others for actions that.. you can not know for sure, that had you been in the same situation, you would not yourself have done or potentially worse? What gives you that need to feel superior enough to try and torment one that is no longer comitting those acts of atrocity? To those of you who hide behind the grey masks only to hurt and scorn and attempt to destroy... Before you do so.. Make full ammends for your own sins, and if you can not... if you can not change the past completely, including your own recollection and -everyone- else’s.. Do not cast judgement without cause. And if you can... heh heh heh heh heh.. Well...really.. what you would have done... is far worse... for who knows what you just prevented happening that could have done good in the world.

never will

I’m never going to stop, I’m never going to run, I’m always going to want to be there. These are words that are so easily spoken at the start, And each time, with soul pounding, I find myself wanting to believe, To feel that security and love and warmth, I will I’ll talk, I’ll ask, I’ll curl up against, I’ll offer what I can, of what I have, Though it isn’t much it’s all I am, And each time I hear those words, “I promise I never will,” My soul sinks a little lower, As I realise that it’s just words, Just a way to take what isn’t theirs, A way to break me down further Send me spiralling and landing hard As i realise that belief can only hurt. And I want to believe, I want to feel secure, To understand and to accept those words At face value, as they are uttered so easily. I love you, I love your thoughts, your words, Why though can you not trust me? Why do you back away at first sign of a push. Why is that push so easy to create, Because I am broken. I’m broken, perhaps beyond redemption, My trust has been shattered beyond repair. And I want.. oh I want to believe in your words, And I want to know without having to ask. I don’t want to question your love, your loyalty, Your friendship, your feelings. But I’ve heard these words so many times before, And I’ve heard them all in so many ways before. I wish I could give you, That unquestioning belief you think you deserve, For how can I question what you’re thinking or feeling, How can I not understand what you mean. That you’re trying to protect me, or yourself, That it’s only a little that you’ve pulled away. Why do I react to a small little push, As though it’s the end of what should be a stutter. But how can I not? It’s always been, It always will be The moment of truth, When you reveal your emotions. When you reveal that inside,you’re not so sure. When it’s all you can do to hold onto, That one little part of you that’s left unbruised, Unshattered, and you pray, You pray that one day Someone will.. love you. Understand that it’s hard to trust. That you need that confirmation though it’s been given before. Understand, That you don’t -want- to pull away. That you want to be pulled back, Not told to walk. And each time, I find, my mind a little more broken. And you, and you, and you.. You none of you.. are to blame. Not really, For how can I blame another,  When it’s my fear. You can’t fix me,  You can’t mend what another has started to tear, Though I seek out that closeness... Sooner or later, my need, my want...  My desire to stay that way. Will drive away the bravest of men. Do not fret, for what I am. Though you have indeed torn Just a little more of me It was only a tiny pull on that thread. Though I trusted,and loved, It was never your fault. For it was I who believed when I had no right. You who are locked away out of sight. In my memories. In my soul. Once I have loved. I can not forget. Will not forget. Though as time goes by,  It doesn’t take long. To be forgotten, and to see those eyes that once looked at me with warmth, Become, not cold, but unknowing. For to be hated.. that I could understand. To be forgotten.. I think that is what hurts the most. But you.. like them all.. Have already forgotten your words you spoke. They meant little other than a way, To try to take what’s left of me, To use up as you saw fit, To destroy the last thing I have. I’m only a monster after all my friend. For one such as you. You’ll never know, or understand, For you can not see outside of your eyes. Gone. Dust. Reset. Dead. Reset. Forgotten. Lies. I pray one day, you find the happiness you seek. But I know.. and now you know...it was never us. And I sigh a breath of soft relief, That at least I did not lose that last part...

love is: Love is a feeling you get in your soul, It’s a warmth that fills you from bottom to top. It’s a smile when there’s nothing specific has happened. Love is being able to speak up, Being allowed to feel shy or scared, It’s the knowledge that they won’t run the moment you are. Love is a hi when there’s nothing else to say, It’s a dropped call picked up and acknowledged anyway, It’s not giving up at the first thought astray. Love is the ability to say I was wrong, Being given rein to be understood, Being given a chance to regain assurance. Love is a hug when you need it the most, A come here rather than a please go away, Allowed to at least try to be there. Love is many things I’ve come to understand. And I know that I’m broken and pieces are missing, I know it’s hard to really see.

Love is, most of all, most importantly, Being seen, being heard, being known. Feeling like you mean something More than just a faded dream, Destroyed because of promises broken, Knowing I can trust.
