The Norm Is Incredibly Overrated. Standout.
Today I dressed in clothes that are relatively normal for me since my day was fairly casual with a few meetings with friends but nothing out of the ordinary.
Part way through the day I received a phone call from a friend inviting me to attend an Arts Awards Gala later in the evening in which his organization had purchased a table at. One of his colleagues had to back out of the event due to a conflict. Well I was not 100% sure that I would be able to make it as my day was packed full from 4 AM until 5:30 or 6:30 PM. A few hours later my evening meeting needed to reschedule so I decided to go to the Arts Awards Gala.
For some reason, I did not even think about what I was wearing... If it had crossed my mind, I might have stopped and bought some slacks and a sweater to wear that would allow for me to blend in. Instead I rushed to the event wearing jeans, a collared shirt and a bright yellow cycling jacket.
There was one other man at the event of over a hundred people that did not have a suit jacket on. I stuck out like a sore thumb and was sitting at a table full of bankers in the front row that were all dressed in full suits. Many of the men in suits at the event wore the same color suit. Many had similar haircuts. Many had roughly the same look going on.
I may not have dressed the part but at the very least I was memorable.
Depending on your profession, rock your personality and stand out. Do not be exactly like the next guy. Otherwise you are going to get lost in the crowd.
