Some of you may have caught my unboxing stories of these amazing lead cubes a few weeks ago. I’m telling it again here, because it’s a pretty amazing new addition to the collection. Earlier this year, my friend Will in the UK was magnet fishing and exploring the River Sowe near Coventry, when he discovered a massive cache of strange lead cubes cast with mysterious symbols in the shallows of the river, below an old stone bridge. It took some time and some collaboration with both scholars and Shrivinayaka astrologers in India to figure them out, but they were finally identified as sacrificial items know as Rahu Yantra. These items are related to shadow planet Rahu, a malignant deity whose sphere of influence includes thieves, magicians, snakes, poison, jails and isolated places. The cubes are cast in lead with sacred Sanskrit astrological and numerological symbols that we recognize as magic squares here in the West, with all rows and columns adding up to 36. Will initially found about 60 of them, but since that time he’s uncovered nearly 100, and Indian scholars believe they may have totaled 108 since it is a sacred number for sacrifices. Their lead composition and grey color represents the reverse side of the moon’s orbit where Rahu resides, and would have been cast and thrown into the river’s running water to appease the dark entity’s malignant influence with chants and sacrifice by drowning these sacred yantra in a river. I am ever-grateful to Will for the opportunity to add these artifacts to my collection.
