Hey! Question: you are protective of newton because people think he was gay?

Hi there! First off, I want to apologize if I had offended you (or anyone else) with my inner dialogue regarding that post about Sir Isaac Newton. I already feel bad knowing that you felt disrespected. Please do know that it’s not my intention to offend or disrespect you.

Secondly, No. I don’t mean it that way. My first reasoning as to why I’m protective of him could be ascribed to the fact that there are a lot of misconceptions about him. I know I’m not the only “Newton fan” who would say this, but I’m kinda protective of him because: (1) there are a lot of false impressions about him attributable to the subjective statements of his critics; (2) he had very few *personal* correspondences and even his *diaries* were mostly mathematical/scientific; and most importantly (3) he was a VERY private person and had literally become a virtual recluse. Thus, people couldn’t really have an accurate account of what kind of man he was.

Yes, the correspondences between him and Fatio could have multiple interpretations, one of which was the one discussed on that particular post. But it’s in my nature to be skeptical; and I think that it’s just a circumstantial evidence that could be taken out of context bereft from the cohesion of the rest of the correspondences. Hence, it was easily considered a *conclusive proof*. I don’t want to repeat myself by emphasizing my points about Sir Isaac’s nervous breakdown which somehow coincided at the time that their friendship had mysteriously come to an end. And I would certainly not deny that they had a very intense and close relationship. However, I still don’t think that the assumption is definitive especially when the sources cited were very one-sided and hadn’t given substantial evidences. I believe that the brilliant Swiss mathematician was gay but the evidences for Sir Isaac wasn’t really *solid*. Moreover, I think that men could have really close bond and deep friendship which is in no way sexual at all (I mean why do people have to make everything about sex?). I would love to know more about him and I respect everyone’s gender, sexuality or identity, more so of one of my heroes. Thus, I think it’s premature and credulous to just surmise something that isn’t really corroborated with substantial accounts/proofs.

To be honest, my second assertion was not really about the main point, but to the comments and ridicules thrown at him e.g. people had regarded him as “someone who had died a virgin” as if it was a bad thing; or that “he was a pussyboi”;or that he “stole” calculus from Leibniz because the post wasn’t even about him vs. Leibniz (I don’t want to deviate from the topic but oh please don’t get me started when people talk about this); or that he “was scared of women” = he’s gay; “I hate him because Physics was hard because of him but he had redeemed himself because of this."—what does that even mean??? etc. I know some of those are just harmless banters, and I may sound so petty or overly-sensitive. And I want to apologize if my defences would be: (1) I’m such an uwu obsessive fan; (2) since when did being a virgin OR dying a virgin have become such a bad thing??; (3) I have an assumption that he was ace or just had no interest about those *affairs* because he was very much occupied with his studies (and even his occult studies) and other professional/scientific endeavours (just like the arguments about Tesla). BUT I know that my assumption, just like *those theories*, was purely subjective. The thing is, I’m aware and I acknowledge that, but those people would immediately conclude their views as facts.

In conclusion, my reasoning was mostly due to my aversion of prejudiced information about him that were taken out of context, especially when they came from unreliable sources, biased critics or people who don’t really know what they are talking about and were mainly talking about their subjective perception. I want to emphasize that I am respectful of his (or anyone else’s) gender / sexual orientation / identity, but I hope people wouldn’t claim their personal assumptions as facts. I don’t judge people based on their sexuality/gender/identity, race, religion or age. And I definitely wouldn’t think that people had “redeemable qualities because they were *insert whatever you want them to be*”. For me, Sir Isaac Newton was one of the greatest geniuses that have ever lived—irregardless of his sexuality, social status, race or religion. This man was so in one with the cosmos. He had dedicated his entire life on what he was truly passionate about, and hadn’t conformed to the society’s *standards* on how people should be. (Also, he was sassy AF) I could say a lot more things about him but this would only lengthen my response to you so I’d rather not. My admiration, respect and love for him would not change no matter what his status and identity had been.

Again, I sincerely apologize (and my apologies to anyone else as well). It had not been and would never be my intention to offend or disrespect anyone, and I want to say sorry as well for the terms that I had used because of my initial intent to have objective terms. I don’t want to defend myself because I know that “language” would be a pathetic excuse. Again, I’m sorry.
