The day of my second drum lesson arrived and I can’t tell you how stoked I was. We assembled and straight away the subject of Bob’s lesson surprised me. I assumed we would be looking at Rock drumming but instead we looked at the Shuffle or, as Bob called it, the “Phuffle” rhythm. For the next few weeks we concentrated on the shuffle feel and four way coordination. We played the ride, snare, bass drum and foot-played hi-hat and really got all our limbs working.
Historically the shuffle came first so I can understand why we looked at it at the beginning. Besides, it turned out to be a real test of commitment as we lost a student who gave up within a very short time. I loved it of course.
