东宫西宫 | EAST PALACE, WEST PALACE (1996) dir. Zhang Yuan In China, homosexuality isn't illegal, but homosexuals are routinely persecuted by police and arrested for "hooliganism". A young gay writer called A-Lan is attracted to a young policeman named Xiao Shi, and manages to have himself arrested and interrogated for a whole night. His life-story, which he tells during the interrogation, reflects the general repression of the Chinese society. East Palace, West Palace (东宫西宫). 1996. Dir. Zhang Yuan (张元).

Zhang Yuan’s East Palace, West Palace is the first Mainland Chinese film to explicitly depict homosexuality. Based on a short story by renowned writer Wang Xiaobo, the film stars Hu Jun as a policeman on patrol at the Forbidden Palace, a location known for being a secret gathering spot for gay men at night. He arrests a young man and brings him back to his office for an interrogation which ends up lasting the entire night, as the young man engages the policeman in a seductive retelling of the painful history of his own sexuality. East Palace West Palace is a haunting exploration of the depths of forbidden sexuality and the unstable power dynamic between the state and the marginalized individual.

[Starts from the part where Zhang Xiao leaves Si Han‘s house with Huang Di and it‘s just Si Han, Ma Yi Nuo, and Yin Zheng] Si Han forces the two of them to the drink his poisonous wine. Ma Yi Nuo drains the whole glass- lately she had been really thirsty since she is drinking for two, her and her baby. Yin Zheng is in mid-sip when Yi Nuo falls to the ground. Yin Zheng spits out the wine in his mouth. "You poisoned the wine?" Yin Zheng askes Si Han in disbelief. Si Han doesn't answer, but throws his head back and laughs. Yin Zheng runs to Yi Nuo and picks her up. He knew he had to save her, afterall, she was Zhang Xiao‘s sister. He staggers to his car, places Yi Nuo into the back seat, and he gets into the driver seat. He know that he shouldn‘t be driving in this condition but there was a life at stake. Yin Zheng heads towards the Hospital. All of the sudden, his vision starts to get blurry. He blinks several times but that didn't help. Suddenly, he sees the bright flash of headlights and -CRASH- Zhang Xiao had just finished congratulating Huang Di and his new fiance when her cell phone rings. Its a call from the hospital. She quickly gets into her car and anxiously drives to the hospital. When she gets there, she sees Si Han kneeling in the hallway sobbing. "What happened?!" Zhang Xiao asks Si Han but he doesn't answer. She rushed into the room and almost had a heart attack. Lying on one bed was Yi Nuo with a dozen of tubes connect to her. In the other bed layed Yin Zheng, covered in bloody bandages from head to toe. "Oh my god. What happened?" Zhang Xiao askes the doctor. "They got into a car accident." "What condition are they in?" Zhang Xiao whispers, holding back tears. "The lady on the left will recover in a few days but I‘m sorry to say that the man on the right is in a coma." Zhang Xiao runs out into the hallway and slaps Si Han. "WHAT DID YOU DO TO THEM?" She shouts. "I didn‘t mean to do it, I swear! If it could go back in time and prevent this from happening, I would! But it's too late now." He says, between sobs. Zhang Xiao could see that he was really torn up by what he did and he really was sorry about it. She sighed. She went back into the room and sat on Yin Zheng‘s bed. Now all she could do was care for Yin Zheng and pray that he would recover from his coma. Yin Zheng sits up slowly, head pounding. He looks around the room and sees men with queues. "Where am I?" He asks. One of the strange looking men walk towards him. "四爷， you're finally awake!" "Who is he calling 四爷?" Yin Zheng wonders. "Who am I? What is this place?" "You are 4th prince, son of King KangXi." The eunuch replys. [[Insert Bu Bu Jing Xin but in 四爷‘s pov here]] It has been a few weeks since Yin Zheng got into the coma and Zhang Xiao has been visiting him everyday. As she walks into the room today, she sees Yin Zheng begin to stir. She quickly runs to his bed side and holds his hand. It sounded like he was trying to say something. Slowly, he opens his eyes. "Ruo Xi" he says. Was she hearing wrong? Did he really just call her Ruo Xi? Does he remember who she is? "What you call me?" She whispers, afraid that she heard wrong. "Ruo Xi" he says again, a smile showing on his face. "It's been 300 years. My wait for you has finally paid off." Yin Zheng says. "We are finally together. I didn't know happiness is this simple until now." Zhang Xiao says, holding back tears of joy. [A month later] Si Han and Yi Nuo gets married and Yi Nuo give birth to the baby boy. Yin Zheng and Zhang Xiao get married and have 1000 kids :3 They all live happily ever after. 《 THE END 》 Yeah I was bored so I decided to write this. Hopefully it wasn't to bad LOL
