If you have time- “you can still lay by me” with sonny??
I think sick Sonny would be pitiful. He loves to be nurtured.
“Do I feel warm to you?” Sonny asked first thing when you walked in the door from work. He was currently laid out on the couch in an old pair of sweats and a ratty T-shirt, otherwise known as his “sick clothes”. He looked flushed and sounded like he had severe congestion.
“Hi to you too, babe,” you said letting the bags of groceries slip from your hands to the floor. Sure you could have made two trips but two trips are for wimps.
“Doll. Seriously. I’m sick,” Sonny said pathetically. His head fell back onto the plush arm of the sofa.
“Here let me see.” You walked over to him leaned down and felt his forehead. “Sonny, you are burning up,” you informed him. “Have you taken anything?”
“No. Was waiting for you,” he said in a nasally voice. “My throat hurts, my ears hurt. Even my hair hurts. I can’t stop coughing, my nose is stuffy and runny at the same time.” He grabbed a tissue and stuffed it up one nostril.
“Awww… poor baby.” You kissed his forehead. “Probably a bad cold. I’ll get you some medicine from the cabinet. I’ll be right back,” you said patting his hand.
Grabbing cold medication and ibuprofen you headed back to Sonny with a cool glass of water. First, you took his temperature. You also wet down a washcloth and put it on his forehead. “Your temp is 102. Want some soup? Or maybe some tea?”
He held his throat when he swallowed the medicine. “Rather have something cool.”.
“Popsicle coming up,” you said patting his leg making your way out of the room.
“Orange, please.” Sonny sat up. “Oh, a blanket and my pillow too.”
“Got it.” You said over your shoulder.
“But- but not that scratchy one. I want that big, fluffy one, ya know. The one you got for Christmas? And warm it up in the dryer.”
“Fluffy one, in the dryer. No problem.”
“Doll. One more thing.”
You sighed heavily. “What Sonny?”
“I love you,” Sonny croaked.
Smiling you shook your head. “Love you too, babe.”
An hour later and Sonny had fallen asleep. He looked so sweet when he slept, even though he was snoring like a freight train. Taking a break from your presentation, you flipped on the TV to watch the new episode of your favorite show. Sonny started kicking the blanket off him and tossing on the sofa. When you felt him he was sweaty.
Sonny opened his eyes. “Good God, I’m sweatin’ like a pig,” he mumbled.
“Your fever broke, babe,” you informed him.
He groaned. “I’m so achy.”
“Maybe a hot bath with Epsom salt will help,” you suggested.
He looked at you with pouty lips and heavy eyes.
“Which I will go run for you right now,” you said.
“How does that feel?” you asked as you massaged his legs. Sonny was back on the sofa after his bath in which you shampooed his hair and washed his back.
“Good.” He stretched then looked at you with his baby blue eyes glassy from his cold. “You take good care of me.”
“Well, I kinda have to. You know the whole sickness and health clause in our vows,” you teased. “Seriously though you always take such good care of me and know how to make me feel better. I enjoy being able to return the favor.”
“I try my best.” He managed a smile but a yawn took over. “I think my colds meds are making me sleepy.”
“I’m beat too. Why don’t we head to bed.”
“I’ll sleep out here. Don’t wanna get you sick too,” he said as he started snuggling down on the sofa.
“Nonsense. You can still sleep with me.”
“But-”
“Dominick, get your butt in bed,” you instructed pointing to the bedroom.
Once in bed, you flipped on his favorite Netflix series. He laid his head on your chest, slung his arm around your waist and his leg over yours as you gently scratched through his hair and at the back of his neck.
About a half-hour later he became very still. “Sonny?” you said softly.
The steady sound of his breathing as your only response. He had fallen asleep. You hoped he would feel better in the morning.
Reaching for the remote you turned off the TV cloaking the room in darkness and nestled down in bed. Before closing your eyes you kissed Sonny’s soft hair and whispered, “I love you,” in his ear.
