Something in the Darkness

Between the horrorterrors during the night and the hordes of undead during the night, it was no wonder she eventually lost her mind.

After she lost her beloved, she lost what hearing she tried so dearly to hold onto. With no one to listen to, what need did she have for such a hinderance?

Soon after, she forgot her voice. There was no need to speak. Her paintings in blood stained the walls of caves all across the land. Her words tainting the world that had been so cruel to her.

Sweeps passed before a hunt took her left eye - scaring her face and leaving her half blind. She continued to run. She continued to hide, and hunt, and paint.

Hunts became more difficult as time went on, and as she lost whatever sense she had left.

And so one night, she stopped.

She knew her paintings and her words ran together as she still attempted to leave her mark on the walls of the world.

There were no more sounds.

There were no more sights.

There were no more hunts. Or paintings. Or sermons.

There were only memories.

The darkness consumed her and left her hungry, alone, and very, very scared. She lived her last days shivering in a cold cave, her last memory only of her love's face - his mouth drawn into a smile, arms open and waiting for her to join him.

Start to Finish

He was probably the most caring, kind, and selfless person she had ever met. To her, he was perfect beyond belief, though she knew he was nowhere near a perfect person. She enjoyed watching him, mostly from afar, considering her affliction and her habits due to it. Though, there were times where he seemed to notice her in the crowd, her bright green eyes focused on him. She usually played it off as a trick of her vision, but sometimes it was as if he would move or shift so that she would be able to see or hear him better despite all of the others around him.

He never said anything about how she tilted her head to hear better, or how she stared at his lips to understand the entirety of what he was saying or sometimes his eyes to feel the same thing he was feeling. His passion fueled her existance; she began to write down each word he spoke - public or just to her. For there were many personal and private conversations between the two. Long nights spent together under a perfect sky. He never made a show of the words she said incorrectly due to learning them just from reading lips. He would correct her quietly as if it were a small caress. He was always so gentle, but never patronizing. She wasn't her disability, and he knew that. She wanted to know all there was to know about him. This troll raised by another instead of a lusus, this man so passionate in his beliefs and his other memories that he would defy the words and threats of the most powerful troll in existance. The passion that drove them from peaceful nights by a fire to days and nights on the run. The words and the sermons that took their friends and supporters one by one away from them until they were the only ones left. They continued running, for the sake of their friends - for the sake of the revolution they had become the leaders of - for the sake of their people. High blood. Low blood. It didn't matter. They were equals. They all had hopes and dreams, ideas of who they would be. More and more trolls joined their cause, but it wasn't enough. It was never enough. It wasn't enough to keep their beloved friend from becoming grafted to the ship of the very person who wanted them all executed. It wasn't enough to save the life of the woman who raised the man leading the revolution. And it wasn't enough to save him. In the end, she lived the longest. The one raised by a cat with two mouths, who could hardly hear, but knew almost every dialect and language on their planet. The one who kept a detailed record of every sermon, every day, every memory of him. The one who was spared. That final scream. The final words from her beloved. She could only have wished she had died alongside him.
