Death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh "The Lion of Punjab" - First Ruler of the Sikh Empire

On June 27, 1839, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder and first ruler of the Sikh Empire, died at the age of 58. Known as the “Lion of Punjab,” Ranjit Singh transformed a collection of Sikh warrior factions into one of the most powerful states in South Asia.

Born in 1780, Ranjit Singh rose to power through military skill, diplomacy, and leadership. He united the Sikh misls, captured Lahore in 1799, and established it as the capital of his empire. Under his rule, the Sikh Empire expanded across Punjab, Kashmir, and surrounding regions.

Ranjit Singh built a modern army, strengthened administration, encouraged religious tolerance, and created a period of stability and prosperity in Punjab. His famous rule was marked by cooperation between different communities and the modernization of Sikh military forces.

After his death, the Sikh Empire faced internal struggles, eventually leading to conflicts with the British East India Company and its annexation in 1849. However, Ranjit Singh remains remembered as one of the greatest leaders in Sikh and Indian history.
