To my Silid Balangay colleagues, know this: I will never forget the moments we shared together. I may have been an imperfect colleague but working within a near-perfect work environment has made everything so perfect for me. Thanks for the memories. Self-evaluation for LIS 181 Internship: 2nd Semester

This is my self-evaluation for my stay at the Silid Balangay:

PRECISION AND ACCURACY

I always have made sure that whatever resources I will catalog will meet the highest standards imposed by the UP on its own resources. I always have consulted the Library of Congress supposed there might be conflicts between the iLib’s works. I also have access to LC Classification scheme of the UP Catalogers in order to maintain the precision and accuracy of work done. Despite the schedule imposed to us, being quick and the same time these two characteristics, were attained by yours truly.

BEHAVIOR

I always make sure that I exemplify the behavior of what a professional should be. Despite the serious notion of “professionalism”, we at Silid Balangay is more like a family. We still have the same formal remarks with each other but we always have fun and sometimes we even tease each other. I have also made sure to be open to them and at the same time be responsible for my own actions inside the room especially when it comes to my own things.

PUNCTUALITY

Time is very flexible inside the Silid Balangay. I normally would come at 9 AM and finish my tasks till 5 PM. Sometimes, we have overtimes in the week because Ma’am Bianca usually leaves at 6 PM so I usually finish up till 6 PM that’s why it took me only 10 weeks to finish the entire duration of my internship inside the Silid Balangay.

DECORUM

Ma’am Bianca told me to wear comforable clothes during my internship. I usually wear T-shirts and shorts because those are my most comfortable clothes. Besides, Ma’am Bianca mentioned that she doesn’t care if I am wearing shorts as long as I have finished the tasks that I was supposed to finish.

QUANTITY OF WORK DONE

I was able to finish all the collections of the Silid Balangay (around 2,000 books) except the Special Collections that they have which were donated by a guy whose name I don’t even know.

Week 10: A week to remember (DEFINITELY)

Ciao Journal!

I never knew this would come. Like what I’ve been spewing in the first journal entries, I never liked endings and I never liked ending relationships. I should have not approached them, talked to them and opened myself to them. Oppps--I did all those things. The last day of my work in the Silid Balangay finally arrived and I can’t help but cry. I never cried when I ended my internship at the UP Main Library partly because there was no fixity in the Mian Library, we transfer from one section to another after our hours required for that section have been fulfilled. My groupmates, Sam and Tricia were the ones I usually talked with but since Tricia is usually absent and Sam has to attend to other stuff in the same section, we don’t get to converse as much as I had conversed with the people from the Silid Balangay. Before I end this journal let me thank the people who have helped me to achieve this remarkable milestone:

Dean Kate:

Thank you, first and foremost, for your unwavering aid for me when I need it the most. I could never forget the time when I was having a problem if I will be confirming the Ateneo job offer or not. I knew it would consume my time and my wallet. Thank you for offering this place for me to have my internship and also for believing in my capabilities. So much love for you Ma’am :))

Ma’am Bianca

Thank you Ma’am Bianca for being my closest friend in the Silid Balangay! Among all the supervisors that I had before, you are the best. You understand my emotions, you helped me through thick and thin inside the department. I know I may have been a noisy comrade but know this--if it comes to the point that you are being threatened or being subjugated by other people, always fight back, especially if you know you are doing the right thing. Being meek is different from being an underdog that is usually the target of bullying. I know you can do it Ma’am. If you need someone to converse with, I am very much prepared to hear things on your end.

Marvin Tenecio

Thank you Vin for making my stay here fruitful and full of debates. We may have some disagreements about issues on the national scale but know this, I will fully support you in whatever endeavors you’re planning to take. I will be very much willing to have your back. You scratched my back, I will scratch yours. :P

Moselle and Edward

Thank you guys! Although we have not seen each other in great lengths compared to Vin, know that you are as precious as Vin is to me. Good luck on your endeavors!

As I end my stay in the Silid Balangay, I have taught Ma’am Bianca and Vin on how to catalog books. I taught them on how to use the Library of Congress Classification Scheme, how to use the Cutter Numbers and lastly, I taught them on basic preservation practices that can be done to some books that are already aging. I also left a guide for them so that if it comes to the point that they are confused as to what they remember, they can simply read the guide.

Oh, 2,000 books were finally cataloged! :) Those numbers were way higher than the required books that I need to catalog in the first place which is 700. I can’t believe that I just did all of these cataloging. Long live, Silid Balangay! Thank you for changing my perspective when it comes to cataloging :)
