I get this question quite often, but I’m happy to share again!

The answer is sort of the reverse - the word silim, “hello”, is borrowed in part from the Akkadian equivalent. Akkadian is in the same family as Hebrew and Arabic, in which the s-l-m root means “peace”, but the Sumerians conflated the term with the native Sumerian word sil meaning “health”. So, when using it as a greeting, Sumerians meant “health” as in “may you be in good health”.

I guess you could say silim is the etymological step-cousin of shalom, rather than an ancestor. Thanks for your question!

The verb “to heal” is silim (yes, the same as “hello”!) but it’d need a direct object to hold that meaning; otherwise it’d be dingir silim “the deity is healthy”. So instead I’d translate your name as dingir ensilimen, “the deity has healed me”, 𒀭 𒂗𒁲𒂗 in cuneiform.

Hello! I noticed "Silim" seems to be an equivalent of "Hello." Is this word the ancestor of the "Salaam/Shalome" of semitic languages, perhaps loaned in to Semitic languages via Akkadian?

Hi there! It’s actually exactly the reverse — silim with the meaning “hello” was borrowed into Sumerian from Akkadian, which got it from its proto-Semitic ancestor. In Sumerian, though, it didn’t end up carrying the meaning “peace” (as in other Semitic languages); instead, it got conflated with the native-Sumerian word sil, which means “to be pleasant, fit, or healthy”, and thus silim gained the additional meaning of “health”.
