"don't fret, sir. you'll do well enough. i'd follow you to the ends of the earth."
"Los lobos del águila", de Simon Scarrow
alexios and hilarion! (also, because my brain has just connected your url with a fic i read a year or two ago, cato and macro from the eagles of the empire books!)
Oooh, the Roman Army shipping edition. I like it!! Thank you, nonny. :D
Alexios and Hilarion first!
God, these two make for such a wonderful ship, and I adore them. (And any ship that promises to make Alexios happy is automatically an otp to end all otps in my book!) They complement each other beautifully, and the only reason I haven't circled "soulmates" is because the whole nature of their relationship is all about how there's no One And Only for any of us, and there's space in our heart for many people: "The tall mocking man beside him would never fill the place that Cunorix had left empty and aching, but the startled warmth felt good, all the same."
And aaaahhh, Cato and Macro! What a surprise. :D
I haven't kept up with this series in quite a while, and I only ever lowkey shipped it, but writing that fic made me wish there was more! There's definitely some great potential, right from that scene from the first book where Macro asks if he can tell Cato a secret and Cato's instantly like "omg is he coming onto me??" Pretty much your bog-standard no homo moment in your Military Historical Fiction For Dudes, yes, but I also love that bit in The Eagle's Prophecy where Cato tells Macro he'd make someone a wonderful wife, and Macro is more amused than offended. Also, y'know... them Romans. 👀
Send me a ship and I’ll fill out how I feel about it.
"Age withered all people, and perhaps recorded history was the saving grace of those who became old. A reminder that they too were once young and vibrant and making their mark on the world around them."
— Simon Scarrow, Hearts of Stone
Writing Prompt: Dialogue
"Why, it's [----]," "[----]." "What are you doing here?" "My job. And you?" "I've finished my work for the day, [----]. This is where I come to be alone." "Alone? Why would you want to be alone?" "For the same reason as you, I imagine. To think. That is why you are up here, isn't it?"
You fool. You dear fool. We are as the smallest cogs in an intricate mechanism. We must turn on the whim of larger forces. We have no say in it.
Sword and Scimitar, Simon Scarrow
"Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it. Yet those who do study history are doomed to stand by helplessly while everyone else repeats it."
— Simon Scarrow, Hearts of Stone
"A pity. The world always changes, and not often for the better."
