Review: Simon Andersson makes his musical return with the emphatic indie-rock single ‘Try’, an atmospherically motivational journey of sound
Inspired by artists like Francis Moon, The Fray, Coldplay, and Lewis Capaldi, the upcoming Swedish songwriter and producer Simon Andersson has found himself musically intwined since even before his teens. Making his first appearance on national TV at eleven and earning his first award at age thirteen, this incredibly talented musician has been on quite the lifelong journey of pursuing his craft, even if it’s not always been smooth sailing. As he now looks to explore uncharted territory within his sound after making a musical comeback of sorts after a few years away, Simon is back bearing his latest single ‘Try.’
Strikingly luscious piano keys are what lead us into ‘Try’, vibrantly ringing out into an open-aired feeling soundscape, only accompanied by an equally bright, reverberated slow electric guitar riff that absolutely encapsulates both a haunting resonance and uplifting core right away. Cascading into the first verse with an ease, the piano fades out but the soundscape continues its emphatic palette of guitar with the addition of steady beats you can’t help but sway along with. A tumbling chorus offers the chant-along moment you’ve been waiting for all along though, delivering upon a huge-feeling atmosphere and diversely layered production that transports you to the floor of an empty area, watching Simon perform just for you. Wrapped up in a groovy deep-toned guitar riff, climactic beats and plentiful lyrical hooks you’ll pick up immediately and find yourself singing along to without even realising, ‘Try’ really soars through its chorus whilst the verses deliver a more intimate moment for you to listen along to Simon’s motivational narrative at hand. The vocals interlace perfectly within the track’s blend of mellow undertones amidst a rockier depth, ever-so rich in their emotional captivation but familiar and warm in a way that feels comforting too, delivering not just a sound that’s easy on the ears but lightly weighted in an impassioned and personal delivery too. If you’ve ever sought an anthemic, hard-hitting release that’ll encourage you to follow every single one of your dreams, then look no further than ‘Try.’
Lyrically, ‘Try’ is just as positive as its sound, pushing you to be your greatest and never letting yourself give up. As Simon found his words relating to his own experiences growing his music career and finding years ago for it to be an incredible challenge littered with failure and hardships, his journey is very clear all the way through ‘Try’, even if while penning the release he never made the connection himself. As his words flow through the difficulties of life, lyrics like ‘if you believe it, you can find a way’ seek to provide a much needed lift in spirits for anyone listening along, reminding that anything is achievable should you have that faith in yourself to reach those heights. Hooking you on the choruses’ memorable line, Simon sings ‘don’t be disheartened, all you gotta do is try’, urging that rather than being weighed down by struggles that may seem insurmountable, you re-adjust your mindset and find that push to move forward. Whilst it can be hard to believe it’s as easy as just trying at times, Simon’s heartfelt words are here to remind you that you aren’t alone in those struggles and everyone has experienced their own days they can barely find the energy to survive, but it’s important to remember that: ‘a good thing will take you longer.’ Flowing through this motivational journey of sound and lyricism, it’s difficult to walk away from the three and a half minute experience of ‘Try’ without feeling compelled to make changes and live for yourself, inspired by Simon’s own difficult path but in awe of the beauty it has led him to create.
Check out ‘Try’ for yourself here to appreciate Simon’s emphatic indie-rock sound and poignant narrative interlaced within it!
