The level of creativity that we are given with any modern music mixing tool is only limited by what we can imagine. Now, that sounds over our heads and grandiose since it is actually difficult to create new creative ways to mix music but the possibility is always there. Some will see this as an unlimited tool box that allows us to create music beyond anything that has been created before, but some will also see it as a detriment to our own perception of what we are able to create. Think about the promo and showcase DJs who masterfully put together a routine; a routine that not only combines DJ skills and technique but also production skills. Creating a set like that goes far beyond what we define to be the job of a DJ. Can a simple DJ still make a case for their style with the amount of customization that can be done in a mix? The simple mix is considered basic by too many of us, and it is usually our last choice when thinking of ways to combine two songs.
