#4 - The 1975 - Sincerity Is Scary

The 1975 puts the alternative in alternative rock, as they try their hands at whatever genre they choose. Whether it’s heavy punk rock, acoustic folk, or 80s pop, they can really stick the landing no matter what it is. With “Sincerity Is Scary”, they cook up a smooth jazz and hip hop influenced R&B record. With the prominence of the saxophone, as well as the shuffling drums, the record feels like a casual stroll through the city on a sunny day. I am so in love with the way this song sounds, but the lyrical content just takes me over the edge. Lead singer Matt Healy is confronting his insecurities as well as encouraging his lover to do the same. In spite of what society has dictated to men in regards to showing emotion and being vulnerable, being able to express both is crucial to the development of a healthy relationship. The song is a conversation that begins but never quite ends. Matt lists off some things that pisses him off towards the end of the track, and seemingly gives up mid verse, having poured enough of his heart out without a response. The backing choir on the chorus sets the track off just right. If you want to know a song I’m never going to get tired of playing...this is the one. I could wake up to this song everyday and most likely be better off for it.
