Ana Rucner - Alkarski Ponos
2015 marks the 300th anniversary of Sinjska Alka.
Sinjska Alka is an equestrian competition which marks Sinj’s victory over Ottoman Turks. Sinjska Alka has been inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List since 2010.
As mentioned, Sinjska Alka is an equestrian competition in which the alkar (knight) aims his lance at a metal ring hung on a rope 3.32m high, while at almost full gallop on his horse. The metal ring, also called the alka, is made up of two concentric rings connected by three bars 120º apart. Hitting the middle ring gives the alkar three points, hitting the top segment is worth two points and the two bottom segments are worth one point. Obviously not hitting the alka gets zero points, but if the alkar takes the alka away from the rope and hits any part of it on the way down, he receives additional points.
Bottom segments - u jedan
Top segment - udva
Middle ring - u sridu
Only men born in the Sinjska Krajina (Sinj and surrounding cities) can take part and only the most notable men from Sinjska Krajina can become the alkar vojvoda, which is a ceremonial role as leader. The costumes worn by the alkari are the same ones worn in the 18th century, making Sinjska Alka an invaluable part of preserving Croatian culture and history.
