Finished watching Titanic yesterday for the first time in over a year.
My perspective had totally changed since the last time. I still loved the sinking scenes, even though I am deeply thalassophobic. And I still believe that Cal Hockley is the most underrated character in that film. He undergoes a far stronger character arc than Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater.
But previously, I had raged against Rose for jumping back onto the ship. Now, I completely understood it. What I did not understand was why she even brought Jack back to her mother and Cal after Titanic struck an iceberg. I don’t even understand why Cal thought he could expect Jack back in the first place, since he sent Lovejoy to chase him off earlier.
In bringing Jack back to the same people who despised him, holding his hand no less, Rose is arguably responsible for his framing, imprisonment, and near drowning. Why on earth did she do this? She could have warned her mother and Cal herself, whilst Jack waited on deck. I realise that her decision made for better tension and stakes, but from a character perspective, it was ludicrous.
Visuals still stunning.
