1. 

sleep never came easily for din. he’d spent far too many sleepless nights simply staring up at the sky, wishing for sleep to call for him. most of the time, it didn’t, but he’d grown used to that. plus, keeping the kid safe, well, he’d felt even less willing to allow himself to rest, always wanting to be on high alert. he could only imagine the kind of bounty that was on his head. between the bounty on himself and the kid? well, he wouldn’t be surprised if half the galaxy’s bounty hunters were out to get them. he’d grown used to just relaxing with the kid, taking naps as they were able.

but now? well, now, they weren’t alone anymore. 

he’d grown used to it. he’d grown used to the way that he was able to talk to another person who wasn’t constantly out to get him. someone that was able to tell him stories of the galaxy. ones that he’d never heard before. he was able to travel, to still do his job ------------ and he did it around someone else. it was weird. getting used to having someone else around. but he’d gotten used to it with the child, and well, he’d do it all over again. it was nice to think that someone had his back. that for once, he wasn’t simply alone. 

he could remember it clearly, the first time they met --- loneliness. he could still hear the tone of her voice speaking the word. it felt like, after what felt like ages, that theme in his life was gone.

sighing, the mandalorian looked out at the horizon, eyes scanning for any signs of problems. any signs that where they were stationed now wasn’t safe. for now, he could allow himself to rest. as he sighed, he moved further into the ship, seeing tara resting. he stopped for a moment, simply taking a chance to look at her. 

there was a time where he hadn’t wanted to open up, hadn’t wanted to do anything but simply continue on with his life, just keeping the kid safe without worrying about anything else. but somehow, she’d worked her way into his thoughts, into his mind. before he could stop himself, he took a few quiet steps over to her, leaning down a bit more to her level. pulling up on his helmet a bit, he leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead. a sigh escaped his lips as he pulled away, gloved hands tugging his helmet back down. 

she had worked her way into his thoughts, but... for once? din felt like he liked having someone else by his side.

2.

fighting had been the only reason he’d gotten himself this far in life. there had been many times where he’d gotten himself into trouble for jobs and he’d had to fight tooth and nail just to simply escape. now, yes, he’d still found himself in the same positions, but fighting for the people he cared about brought about a newfound rage within him. he was protective ------ that side within him had been proven from the moment he’d found the child. but now? he’d do anything possible to protect tara. to protect the family they’d pulled out of the ashes.

“ --------- are you okay?” he practically panted, him putting his blaster away on his hip, a hand moving to take off his helmet. it was almost funny, really. how much he’d come to trust her over the time that they’d come to know each other. with a hand holding his helmet to his side, a hand on her cheek, he moved to lean in to kiss her. the tension from the pure adrenaline that had been flowing through his body from battle seemed to vanish, a soft breath escaping his lips as he pulled away, forehead resting against hers.

she was more than capable of handling herself ------ he’d seen her fight. he knew the skills she possessed, the things she could do to protect herself. and yet, even with the knowledge of all of that, he still found himself worrying.

worrying. a new habit he was sure he’d never be able to shake.

3.

the chill in the air was felt deep within his bones, him pulling a blanket around himself on top of the many layers he’d already padded on beneath his armor. and somehow, it still wasn’t enough. the bounties he’d chased after brought him around the entire galaxy, but the cold moons like this always made the entire job a bit more painful than normal. the trail had gone cold, and instead of incessantly searching, he’d put out feelers around town, deciding to check up on them in the morning. if din was a good judge of character like he felt he was, he doubted the person he was after would be leaving the small mining moon anytime soon. 

“here,” he said, moving to the log in front of the fire where she’d been sitting, handing her a cup and moving to wrap an extra blanket around her. “it’s some local drink from one of the traders here. they gave me a fair price on some trades. i figured i’d get something that wasn’t just to constantly fix this piece of junk,” he said, nodding his head towards the razor crest.  din’s voice was muffled by his helmet until he took it off once he sat next to her, placing it in front of him near the fire. 

the front of it faced towards him, and for a moment, din stared at it, faced with the vision of what everyone else saw when they looked at him. a man behind a mask. looking away, his vision moved to tara, a small smile tugging at his lips.

it was easy to fall in conversation, enjoying a moment of peace while the child was asleep, resting peacefully inside of the razor crest. it was even easier to fall under her familiar trance, lips finding hers. the fire crackled in the background, the reflection of the two of them shining from the metal of his helmet.

4. 

he felt was losing himself, lost in the constant terror of the child being gone. 

maybe he should’ve expected it to happen one day. but he’d fought for him once --------- he’d do it again. he’d do anything he had to in order to ensure his safety. scouring the galaxy, getting information, finding old connections to help, it was taking over his mind. it consumed him. the helplessness of not being able to do anything to help the child right away left an ache in him that he wasn’t quite sure how to mend. 

and yet somehow, being around her? the burden was lifted ever so slightly. din had always been used to showing all of his emotions on his face, no matter his audience. after all, they were all hidden by a mask. he wasn’t used to holding his emotions back, to holding back a look on his face. and maybe that was why they found themselves a bit closer together after a long day searching for answers. searching for anything to bring them back to the child.

feeling her lips against his, the sense of calm around them? it seemed to bring a bit of clarity. he let himself simply get lost in the sensation, a hand brushing gently into her hair, pulling her ever so slightly closer to him. and as his lips broke from hers, breath mixing with hers, his lips moved to press gently against the corner of her mouth before pulling away to meet her eyes. the hand in her hair moved down to brush along her jaw, his thumb dragging along her skin. 

he was sure he could get lost in moments like this with her forever, if she’d let him.

5. 

he could get used to the sense of peace that was wrapped around them. the child was chasing after what din was sure the child hoped would be his next meal. “i don’t know how that kid has that much energy.” it was his attempt at humor, a small smile tugging at his lips. the helmet was discarded back on the ship, a step, even for him. it still wasn’t easy, always wanting to keep it close if there was a chance someone could approach them. but for now? he felt comfortable around his family. a family that had completely taken him by surprise, and had quickly taken him by storm. the last sense of family he’d had was all he’d ever known as a child. since then, all he’d known was the feeling of brotherhood, of the nature of his clan. but after being on his own, and then faced with the child, with tara... they’d been the only people to make him feel like he could let his guard down. at least for just a moment, anyway.

as din approached tara, he leaned over ever so slightly, lips finding her temple as a simple gesture before pulling away. bringing his attention back to the child, arms crossed over his chest gently. he could relax, for now, knowing that they were safe. he could relax knowing that nothing was hanging over their heads and that for once, they could just relax and enjoy what bit of quiet they’d found themselves in.

what was once a clan of two had quickly turned into a clan of three.

still,  if  she  had  an  inquisitor  on  her  heels,  she  wanted  to  shake  them  off.  and  fast.  “ i  don’t  know  where  any  of  your  precious  little  jedi  are. ”  her  words  were  laced  with  annoyance,  keeping  her  gaze  fixed  on  the  woman  in  front  of  her.  it  wasn’t  a  complete  lie.  bo - katan  didn’t  keep  tabs  on  anyone.  she  knew  what  information  of  her  allies’  coordinates  could  do  if  it  ever  got  into  the  empire’s  hands. “ and  even  if  i  did? ”  a  beat.  “ i  wouldn’t  be  telling  you. ”

❛  while  i  am  grateful  for  the  jedi  order,  and  their  protection,  i  must  question  whether  if  their  involvement  is  necessary  at  times.  ❜      did  their  involvement  only  breed  more  for  the  war,  and  did  their  involvement  truly  help  the  people  who  so  desired  the  protection?  all  she  wished  for  in  this  moment  was  an  end  to  the  war,  for  peace  to  finally  reign  above  all.  however,  that  would  be  years  down  the  road,  senate  hearings  and  negotiations  would  continue  back  and  forth  until  an  agreement  that  satisfied  all  could  be  made.

a  wishful  dream  she  needed  to  let  go  of  but  would  never.

❛  i  just  —  i  wonder  if  the  involvement  prevents  the  senate  from  negotiations,  the  separatists  believing  we  have  an  upper  hand.  ❜

     “  ouch, tara, that sounds like doubt coming from you,  ”  all within due time, movements underneath the corrupt planet shall take place. to be sprung up so quietly and unannounced was expected but not taken lightly,  “  you will have your holocron by midnight. coruscant doesn’t pull any strings when it comes to its history with the empire,  ”  what it means to her is if there’s just a slight pinch going on, surely, there will be consequences behind it. this was her only window to snatch the prized possession. what lies inside is beyond her interest.
